The prestigious beauty pageant, Miss Universe 2023, was held at the Jose Adolfo Pineda Arena in San Salvador, El Salvador, on November 19, 2023 (IST). The winner of this year’s edition is Miss Nicaragua Sheynnis Palacios. This was the very first time that Nicaragua took the crown home.
The 72nd edition of Miss Universe made history by breaking its decades-long stereotypes and embracing inclusivity and representation. The latest edition featured a diverse group of contestants, including a plus-sized model, two mothers, two transgender people, the first Pakistani, and the first Black Miss Spain competing for the competition.

Miss Universe 2023 became the first time our neighbour, Pakistan, participated in the pageant. A 24-year-old model named Erica Robin represented the country on the world beauty stage. She also made it to the list of top 20 contestants, where more than 80 countries participated. Erica won the title of Miss Universe Pakistan in September 2023.
Erica Robin made a bold statement during the swimsuit round. The model was seen wearing a ‘burkini’ for the following round. She wore a baby pink colour kaftan, which had a shimmery-ruffled neckline.
Erica gave a strong yet beautiful statement in the competition by ditching the usual bikinis and wearing something that made her comfortable and more appropriate per her country’s norms. Audiences cheered for Erica as soon as she stepped onto the ramp.

Miss Pakistan, Erica Robin has received much love from people all around the world and from her country. However, her participation in the coveted competition was also met with severe backlash by the orthodox sect of Pakistan. While addressing this criticism, Erica told BBC:
“It feels great to represent Pakistan. But I don't understand where the backlash is coming from. I think it is this idea that I would be parading in a swimsuit in a room full of men.”
Erica Robin is based in Karachi, Pakistan, and belongs to a Christian family. She first stepped into professional modelling in the year 2020 and also appeared in an issue of Diva Magazine Pakistan the same year. After winning Miss Universe Pakistan, she said she felt honoured and humbled to be the first title winner. She said:
“I am honoured and humbled to be the first ever Miss Universe Pakistan, and I want to highlight the beauty of Pakistan. We have a beautiful culture that the media is not talking about, Pakistani people are very generous, kind and hospitable. On top of that, I would like to invite everyone to visit my country and try the most sumptuous Pakistani cuisines and explore our enchanting nature, our snow-capped mountains, our greeneries and our progressive landscapes.”
