Recently, they had a conversation with People, during which they revealed that they were both diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at the same time. They went through treatment together and by God's grace, they are cancer-free now.
The emotional revelation has brought attention towards William and Melanie. Well, for those who do not know, William Shatner is a popular actor, who is best-known for playing the role of 'Captain James T. Kirk' in the Star Trek franchise. William Shatner's daughter, Melanie is also a popular actress, just like her father. Reportedly, she was born on August 1, 1964, in Los Angeles. Melanie is the youngest daughter of William and his first wife, Gloria Rand. She has two older sisters. Despite coming from a strong filmy background, Melanie chose to build her own career.
During the 1980s and 1990s, Melanie Shatner began her acting career by appearing in films and TV shows. It is worth mentioning that over the years, she even appeared in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Apart from this, she is also a part of The First Power, Syngenor, Knots Landing, Kung Fu: The Legend Continues and Sisters.
However, in the late 1990s, she chose the difficult decision to step away from acting and try her luck in business. Today, she is a successful entrepreneur. Revealing the reason behind leaving acting, Melanie once told Senior Voice Alaska:
"I didn't fully enjoy acting. I made a living acting for a while, but wanted to be successful in other ways. My father was probably relieved because acting can be a brutal profession. But really, anything I wanted to do was okay by him."
Coming to her personal life, in 1999, she got married to actor Joel Gretsch. As of 2026, they have two daughters, Kaya and Willow. However, not much details are available about them. For the unversed, Joel has been a part of multiple projects like Push, Minority Report, The 4400, National Treasure: Book Of Secrets and more.
During an old appearance on Senior Voice Alaska, Melanie once spoke about her father, William and appreciated him for being the best. She stated that William used to do anything to spend time with his daughter, even if that meant to drive the entire night. Recalling the good memories, Melanie shared:
"He would do whatever it took to get home to see us, even if it meant driving all night. I think that illustrates what a wonderful, committed father he was and is. We all have such great memories of getting to hang out with him and watching him work."
Recently, William and his daughter, Melanie had a conversation, during which they opened up about their cancer diagnosis. As per reports, William was diagnosed with stage 4 malignant melanoma, whereas his daughter had breast cancer. During the chat, Melanie opened up about her feelings and revealed that she had lost the hope to live again, but her father helped her. Recalling the moment, Melanie shared:
"I was having a moment and was hysterical. I called you and said, ‘I think I’m dying.’ He gave me, what I think of ever since I was a little girl, a ‘daddy bear hug.' He said, ‘This is going to be a blip in your life. You’re going to get through this, and it’ll be a memory.’"
Now that the father-daughter duo is cancer free, Melanie explained that she is no more afraid about anything. And there is so much freedom and joy in her life.Melanie further recalled that even though she was devastated after the cancer diagnosis, her father, William remained positive and continued working despite the diagnosis.
