Sam Elliott is one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood. He recently appeared on the second season of the hit show, Landman, which premiered on November 16, 2025. His role as ‘Tommy’s’ (Billy Bob Thornton) father has been stealing viewers' hearts. At the beginning of 2026, the veteran actor opened up about his opportunity to appear on Taylor Sheridan's show, claiming that the Landman season 2 is “a lot of fun for the audience,” because it is the perfect mix of drama, humour, and reality. Sam has even confessed that he is looking forward to the show's third season even though it hasn't been confirmed yet.
Prior to Landman, Sam Elliott had worked on a number of well-known series and movies. Some of his most notable projects are Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), Lifeguard (1976), Mask (1985), A Star is Born (2018) and 1883 (2021), among others. However, most people might not be aware that one person who has constantly remained by his side to support him is his wife, Katharine Ross. According to reports, Katharine Ross was born in Los Angeles, California, on January 29, 1940. She spent a good chunk of her childhood living in Hollywood despite her parents not having any association with the entertainment industry. After some time, Katharine and her family decided to move to a neighbourhood near the San Francisco Bay Area called Walnut Creek. Coming to her education, Katharine attended Las Lomas High School, from which she graduated in the year 1957.
After graduating from her high school, Sam Elliott's wife, Katharine Ross, went on to attend Santa Rosa Junior College. It was here that she discovered her passion for acting for the first time. Apparently, her performance in the school's production of The King and I played a major part in her making up her mind to pursue a career in entertainment seriously. No sooner did the school year end than Katharine officially dropped out and applied to The Actor's Workshop in San Francisco. After joining, she spent her time there both working and studying for three whole years. On top of this, Katharine also managed to land a few minor roles on television. During an interview with Life Magazine in 1968, Katharine recalled this time and said:
"I was queen of the screen tests. Daily runs from San Francisco to L.A. and back in time for the Workshop's curtain time. I played a whole string of hit-and-run drivers: an innocent hit-and-run driver, a hardened hit-and-run driver, a well-to-do, snotty teenage hit-and-run driver. On Gunsmoke, I was a sympathetic, crippled clubfoot."
Katharine Ross had been struggling for some time with only small parts until she signed a deal with Universal. Soon after this, she landed her first starring role in the movie, Games, back in 1966. While Katharine was filming for the movie, at one point, it came to her ears that director, Mike Nichols, was thinking about casting her in his upcoming film, The Graduate. The movie became a hit with critics and viewers alike, officially making it Katharine's big break in the industry. Her role here also landed her an Oscar and the Golden Globe for New Star of the Year.
Interestingly, Katharine's marriage to the Landman star, Sam Elliott, isn't her first one. In 1960, she married her college sweetheart, Joel Fabiani. However, their union did not last long as the pair filed for divorce only two years after their marriage. Katharine's second marriage was with John Marion in 1964 and lasted till they decided to part ways in 1967. Following this, Katharine found love once again in the Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid cinematographer, Conrad Hall. The former couple was married from 1969 to 1973. Just a year later, Katharine tied the knot with Gaetano “Tom” Lisi, whom she knew from her time on the set of The Stepford Wives. This time, too, however, the marriage did not last as both of them went their separate ways in 1979. Finally, Katharine settled down with her now-husband, Sam Elliott and 40 years later, their marriage still seems to be going as strong as ever.
As per reports, Katharine and Sam first crossed paths when they were filming for their 1969 movie, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. However, at the time, despite liking Katharine, Sam had no way to approach her because she was in a relationship with the film's cinematographer, Conrad Hall. In fact, Sam later confessed that all he could do was “just watch Katharine come and go.” It wasn't until a decade later that they came face to face again. Their first interaction happened in the 1978 Gothic horror movie, The Legacy. After playing on-screen lovers, their chemistry translated off-screen as well. They officially started dating following Katharine's split with her then-husband, Gaetano Lisi, in 1979. After years of waiting, Sam Elliott finally married his crush, Katharine Ross, in May 1984. Four months after they wed, Sam and Katharine welcomed their daughter, Cleo Rose Elliott, on September 17, 1984.
