Rapper Kendrick Lamar is currently leading the limelight for winning the Best Rap Album Grammy Award 2026. It is one of the most prestigious moments for Lamar, as he holds the title of the most-awarded rapper at the Grammys and has surpassed the record previously set by Jay-Z. Lamar now has 26 Grammys under his belt. During his acceptance speech, the rapper paid tribute to Hip Hop, saying that its artistry is ever-present.

When Lamar says that Alford had been with him since day one, he literally means it. The couple has been together since high school. Lamar and Alford met as students of Centennial High School in their hometown of Compton, California, in southern Los Angeles. They first became friends before becoming a couple, and have been together ever since.
Kendrick Lamar and Whitney Alford have been very private about their relationship and are rarely seen at public events. In 2014, the couple made their first public appearance at the 56th Grammy Awards. The duo has kept details about their affair private, but he has been rapping about her for a long time with songs like She Needs Me and Determined. He was once asked about all the influential people on his speed dial, to which he responded:
“One particular young lady, she's been here since Day 1.”
After their first public appearance together, there were chatters about their engagement. He later confirmed the same in a 2015 interview on Power 105.1. Once in an interview with Billboard, Lamar spoke about Alford, who believed in him from day one. Speaking about the same, he said:
“I wouldn't even call her my girl, that's my best friend. I don't even like the term that society has put in the world as far as being a companion — she's somebody I can tell my fears to."
After Lamar and Alford’s engagement, the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named Uzi, in July 2019. They didn’t make any public announcement about it, and instead he revealed her name on his 2022 album, Mr Morale, in the song, where he rapped, “Uzi, your father’s in deep meditation.”
The couple welcomed their second child, a son named Enoch. His arrival, too, was introduced through the cover of the same song. In the cover image of the album, Lamar appears holding Uzi while Alford cradles their infant son in the background. Lamar revealed Enoch’s name through the lyrics of Mr Morale, as he rapped, “Enoch, your father’s just detoxed.”
In an interview with W magazine, Lamar spoke about his journey into fatherhood and revealed that his kids taught him unconditional love. Speaking about the same, he said:
“My children allowed me, in their development as human beings beginning to walk and talk, to remove my ego, to know that my children, too, will have their own independence. That allows me to understand the unconditional love on my end—will I allow them to be themselves? Will I allow them to journey off in the world and experience life for what they know of? That’s love, to me.”
In addition to being a doting wife and loving mother, Alford also founded Love + Ethos, a nonprofit organisation based in Los Angeles. The organisation supports mothers facing systemic, economic, and social challenges. Apart from this, Alford is an esthetician and makeup artist. After her graduation, she launched her own beauty business in Los Angeles.
Whitney Alford once got candid about her mental health journey. She shared a picture of herself with her children and penned:
“I was stuck in a time and place that was no longer my reality and was no longer serving me. My babies forced me to take a long look at myself and journey back through the very things that made me. Then I was referred to a great therapist. After a few years of hard work, I can finally say I hear my own voice again. And it's very powerful."
Alford has played a very important role in Lamar’s creative journey. She provided background vocals on two tracks from Lamar’s 2015 album To Pimp a Butterfly, which were King Kunta and Wesley’s Theory. Her voice then appeared on four tracks of Mr Morale & The Big Steppers, including Mother I Sober. She also made an appearance in Lamar’s 2024 music video for Not Like Us. In the 2025 Grammys, Lamar mentioned Alford while accepting the Song of the Year award and said:
“Whitney in the video crip walking. We goin’ dedicate that one to her.”
