U.S. Representative, Eric Swalwell's campaign has faced new challenges. While trying to win the support of the masses, the Democratic candidate is now facing fresh sexual assault allegations. These allegations have been made by multiple women, including a former staffer who accused him of rape. In turn, it has not only shocked the political circles but also created internal tensions among his fellow campaign and party members. While Eric Swalwell often drew attention for his political work, his wife, Brittany, has mostly stayed away from the spotlight. Unlike her husband, she is a hospitality professional who lives a low-key life. According to The New York Times, she has also worked as the director of sales at the Ritz-Carlton resort in Half Moon Bay, California.
Brittany completed her education at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Personally, she grew up in a family of medical professionals since her parents, Dr Kathryn L. Watts and Dr H. William Watts III, are both dentists based in Indiana.
Eric Swalwell and Brittany Watts reportedly first met through mutual connections in 2015. After dating for a few months, they decided to tie the knot in 2016. They welcomed three children together. However, compared to other political families, Brittany and her kids lead largely private lives.
Despite staying away from the political world, Brittany has joined Eric at some public events and interviews. In fact, during the Capitol Attack incident, she expressed concern for her husband's safety. Brittany also admitted she was shocked by the political violence in the U.S., as she immediately thought about her children's protection. Sharing her reaction, Brittany said:
"I never in my wildest dreams thought that American citizens could get into the Capitol and be so violent inside the Capitol towards my husband and his colleagues. It was surreal initially, and my first instinct was to get my car and get my kids from school."
Eric Swalwell has been campaigning to become California's governor. But before he could win the trust of the public, a report from the San Francisco Chronicle highlighted multiple sexual assault allegations against him. Another report by CNN claimed that his former staffer accused him of raping her. These serious allegations immediately prompted Eric's teammates to back away from him. Therefore, he is now facing multiple problems, including severe allegations, police threats, staff departures, internal unease, and media scrutiny.
However, in his defence, Eric had denied all allegations. He has clarified that the claims are politically driven to harm his campaign. But the controversy has already grown wider, causing a major threat to his political future. Moreover, his campaign to win California's upcoming gubernatorial race has become more difficult. In his words:
"These allegations are false and come on the eve of an election against the front-runner for governor. For nearly 20 years, I have served the public as a prosecutor and a congressman and have always protected women. My focus in the coming days is to be with my wife and children and defend our decades of service against these lies."
