Arcadia's mayor, Eileen Wang, submitted her resignation. She took the decision after confessing about running China-linked propaganda news site. It targeted Chinese Americans for Beijing officials.
Eileen tendered her resignation. She had to make a big political move after she admitted in federal court that she worked as an illegal agent for the Chinese government. The case has shocked many people in California's political circles. Especially, the claims are more serious as prosecutors alleged she used to help Beijing officials spread pro-China propaganda in Chinese-American communities. Among these serious charges, let us know about Eileen Wang.
Eileen Wang is a resident of South Carolina who has built a long career in local politics, business and community outreach. Before getting involved in a high-profile federal investigation, she was admired for her achievements. She came to Southern California from Chengdu, China, around 30 years ago. Eventually, she became a prominent personality in the Chinese-American community in Arcadia. She was elected to the Arcadia City Council in November 2022 as a democrat. According to the local reports, she became the city's first Asian American Democrat.
At the same time, she is also the first female council member from China. Arcadia's mayoral role rotates among the city council members. So, she was serving as the major when she had to resign after the release of the federal case details. Apart from politics, she has also worked in education and community organisations. She has reportedly worked in an after-school program called Little Stanford Academy. In fact, she has served on the Parent-Teacher Association at Camino Grove Elementary School. On the other hand, Eileen has also been linked to business. She even served as President of the American Southwest Chamber of Commerce in the USA.
Eileen Wang is also a mother of two. She has lived in Arcadia for nearly two decades now. According to her background details, her father was a physician in Sichuan province. Later, he worked at the University of Southern California. On the other hand, her mother practised traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture. At the same time, due to her relationship with Yaoning Sun, better known as Mike Sun, her personal life has become a part of the investigation. The duo were previously engaged, and Mike worked on Eileen's 2022 election campaign.
According to federal authorities, Eileen Wang's political and community image was a facade to hide her dangerous operation. U.S. Department of Justice state that she and Mike managed a website called U.S. News Centre. Prosecutors alleged that the website positioned itself as a regular Chinese-American news platform. But in reality, it used to publish propaganda material given by Chinese officials. Court filings also mention that the duo reportedly got pre-written articles and instructions from people linked to Beijing. Authorities allege that these articles included content that denied accusations of human rights abuses in Xinjiang.
At the same time, it criticised the groups opposing the Chinese government, including supporters of Taiwanese independence. Eileen is also accused of reporting viewership numbers and content reach to officials in China. The case is more complex because Mike already went to jail in February 2026 for a four-year federal prison sentence. It was convicted in the same propaganda case. Despite the accusations, Arcadia city officials had no evidence to suggest that the city's money staff or official decision-making processes were affected by Eileen's actions.
Eileen Wang officially admitted her guilt as part of her agreement, which was unsealed on May 11, 2026. Meanwhile, her lawyers released a brief statement in which she said she was "sorry for the mistakes she has made in her personal life." Previously, Eileen had tried to distance herself from Mike by claiming responsibility for his misdeeds. Now, she faces a maximum sentence of 10 years and might be deported after it. The assistant director in charge of FBI LA, Patrick Grandy, said:
"All Americans should be alarmed to learn an elected official was brazenly spreading propaganda on behalf of the Chinese government. The FBI is dedicated to rooting out those illegally acting as agents of a foreign government as they do the bidding of America's adversaries."
