Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleCharlize Theron has left her fans in a state of worry after she was recently spotted at The Odyssey's premiere. While the actress is someone who is known for her beauty and for looking younger than her age, this time, fans noticed that she is beginning to look ‘skeletal.’ Amid the buzz surrounding her health, here's a look at the time Charlize refused to gain weight for a role.
During a previous interview, Charlize Theron confessed that she has retired from taking on roles that require her to undergo extreme body transformations. She especially mentioned that she is never willing to gain 40 pounds for a role ever again. In her words:
“I will never, ever do a movie again and say, ‘Yeah, I’ll gain 40 pounds.’ I will never do it again because you can’t take it off. When I was 27, I did Monster. I lost 30 pounds, like, overnight. I missed three meals, and I was back to my normal weight.”
For those unaware, Charlize has starred in Monster opposite Christina Ricci. Her role in the movie earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress. According to Charlize, even though she could snap back to her original weight after the biographical crime drama, with her increasing age, shedding excess weight gained from roles became nearly impossible.
Charlize realised this for the first time when she put on around 50 pounds for her 2018 drama, Tully. She had such a hard time losing the excess weight that she thought she was going to end up dead. She was quoted as saying:
“Then I did it at 43 for Tully, and I remember a year into trying to lose the weight, I called my doctor and I said, ‘I think I’m dying because I cannot lose this weight.’ And he was like, ‘You’re over 40. Calm down. Your metabolism is not what it was.’ Nobody wants to hear that.”
Charlize recalled that it took her a year and a half to lose the extra pounds she had gained for Tully, claiming that the experience was a “very long journey.” One of the things that she found hard at the time was that she had press junkets around it, but nobody knew she had truly gained weight for the movie. When her photos came out, they believed that it was prosthetics. Due to her gaining weight, her stylist also had difficulty dressing her for red carpets. She said:
“I’ve always found it so funny when I’ve gained weight for movies and then had to go onto a red carpet. I call [my stylist, Leslie Fremar] and say, ‘I’m doing this movie about postpartum depression and I’ve gained like 40 pounds.’ And she’s like, ‘Oh, my gosh! Oh, my gosh! How am I gonna dress you?’ It’s not something that you can just figure out last minute… She’s put a lot of blazers over open backs for me.”
Charlize Theron recently walked the red carpet at La Grand Rex in Paris for the premiere of The Odyssey. She looked elegant in a custom Dior lace gown with a plunging neckline. However, as photos and videos began spreading on the internet from the July 8, 2026 event, social media users began noticing her thin appearance, sparking concerns about her health.
One user wrote, “Love her, but she has lost too much weight.” Another user wrote, “I am concerned, as soon many are here. So thin! Hope all is well with her.” A third user, referring to the trend among celebrities to lose severe weight, penned, “I had hopes she didn't follow the trend among celebrities! But seeing this…it breaks my heart. She always looked fit, now she has no muscles.” Another comment read, “My heart fell when I saw these pictures of Charlize looking so unwell.”
