What is Scarpetta about? Is it based on the Richmond murders?

Many might not be aware, but Scarpetta is adapted from the long-running book series by author, Patricia Cornwell. To date, the book series has 29 titles and has sold more than 120 million copies worldwide. If reports are believed to be true, the book series is loosely inspired by the 1987 South Side Strangler murders in Richmond. Additionally, the character of ‘Kay Scarpetta' is said to be inspired by former Virginia Medical Examiner, Dr. Marcella Farinelli Fierro. According to Cornwell, 'Kay Scarpetta's' character is deeply rooted in Richmond. She said:

“I had to go learn things in order to write about these people. That’s why I went to a medical examiner’s office. Then, when I couldn’t get published, I ended up working there for six years, which was the best thing ever. And becoming a volunteer police officer, all those things right there in Richmond. And had I not done that, I would not have been equipped to create a character like Scarpetta.”

It is worth noting that despite the story being loosely based on the Richmond murders, none of the scenes in the series was filmed in Richmond. Instead, they were filmed in Nashville, with the sets designed to look like Virginia.
