Veteran Malayalam actor and director, EA Rajendran, passed away at his residence in Pattathanam, Kollam. The actor, who was known for her versatile roles, was 71 at the time of his death. Apart from acting, he served as Chairman of the State Horticulture Corporation. Rajendran began his career in theatre and gradually moved into films and television.

What was the cause of EA Rajendran’s death?

EA Rajendran has been battling health issues for a few years and was undergoing treatment. As per multiple reports, the veteran Malayalam actor was having kidney-related issues and was also battling respiratory issues. Rajendran had lately reduced a lot of weight and looked unrecognisable during the AMMA elections in 2025.

At that time, when reports related to his weight surfaced in the news headlines, Rajendran explained that he had reduced his weight as per his doctor’s instructions and added that age, too, was a factor. In an interview with YouTube channel Mainstream One, Rajendran talked about his sudden weight loss and said:

“I reduced weight as per the doctor’s advice to manage my sugar levels. Age is also catching up, and I need to stay careful.”

EA Rajendran pursued acting at NSD

Born to Ayyappan and Sumathi in Thrithallur in Thrissur district, Rajendran was passionate about performing in front of the audience. During his school days, he often participated in plays, which laid the initial foundation of his acting. Not many people know this, but Rajendran is the alumni of the prestigious National School of Drama in Delhi, where he graduated with first rank. He later pursued a television course at the Film Institute in Pune.

EA Rajendran was the brother-in-law of actor and MLA Mukesh

While working in the theatre, Rajendran met Sandhya, the daughter of O. Madhavan and the sister of Mukesh. Rajendran and Sandhya got married, and he got closely associated with the Kalidasa Kalakendram troupe in Kollam, run by his father-in-law.

It was during that time that Rajendran adapted a Russian novel into a stage production that won the Kerala State Government Award for Best Play in 1987. Rajendran and his wife, Sandhya, were the leading performers in the theatre troupe. The couple has a son, Divyadarshan, who is also an actor.

EA Rajendran’s prolific acting career

Soon, Rajendran made his way into films and made some impactful performances. His diverse body of work consisted of almost 60 Malayalam movies, in which he played a variety of roles. Over time, Rajendran built a strong presence in the Malayalam film industry with films such as Greeshmam, Kaliyattam, Pranayavarnangal, Daya, Narasimham, Meesha Madhavan, Pattabhishekam, and many others. Not just this, Rajendran was also a popular face on Malayalam television, appearing in several serials over the years.
