Salim Khan is a prolific screenwriter and is best known for his Hindi classics, Sholay, Zanjeer, Seeta Aur Geeta, and Deewar. Long before he established his foothold in the industry, he met the love of his life, Salma. The couple tied the knot in 1964. It was an interfaith marriage. Salim and Salma are parents to four children, Salman Khan, Sohail Khan, Arbaaz Khan and Alvira Khan Agnihotri. Now that Salim is making headlines due to his health scare, let’s find out the age gap between them.

Salim Khan and his first wife, Salma, share an age gap of seven years

According to multiple reports, when Salim met Salma for the first time, the duo was 24 and 17, respectively. If the reports are believed to be true, then the duo shares an age gap of 7 years. However, the significant age gap never created any issue in their marital life.

Salim Khan and Salma Khan's interfaith marriage

Salim Khan tied the knot with Salma in 1964. However, before tying the knot, the couple used to secretly meet each other in the evening. But it was Salim who decided to meet Salma’s parents. But when he went to her house, he got nervous after seeing so many people present there. During an episode of Arbaaz Khan's chat show, The Invincibles, Salim Khan recalled the moment and said:

"Before our courtship, I told Salma I wanted to meet your parents as hiding and meeting is a wrong thing. So when I went to her house, I felt all the Maharashtrians from India were there. I was very nervous about seeing so many people."

Initially, Salma’s father had concerns about their differing religions. But the screenwriter assured him that religion would never be an issue. However, Salma’s father didn’t accept their marriage. He visited them only after ten years, when Sohail Khan was born. Recalling the time, Salim said:

"My father-in-law told me that I was a nice guy but religion was the problem. I was 24 at that time. I then told him, Doctor, I may have 1760 problems with your daughter, but religion will never be one of them. He came for the first time after Sohail was born. He just saw us and went away."

Salim and Salma followed both Hindu and Nikaah rituals when they got married. In a 2025 interview with Free Press Journal, Salim shared that his first wife, Salma, deeply cherished the saat phere ritual, and thus he himself went to search for a pandit. Later, they also had the nikaah ceremony. She was quoted as saying:

"My wife had loved the saat phere ritual and had seen her sister as well as her cousin follow it. So I myself found a pandit in my locality aur phere lagwa liye. We had a nikaah too, which is essentially a ritual that ascertains that you are not marrying under pressure or force."

Who is Salim Khan's first wife, Salma Khan?

According to a report by Starsunfolded, Salma was born as Sushila Charak on December 6, 1942, in Mumbai. Her father was a doctor by profession and belonged to the Dogra community. She is widely known as the first wife of the prominent Indian screenwriter, Salim Khan and the mother of Bollywood superstar, Salman Khan. In a past interview with Masala, Salman Khan called himself a 'mama’s boy'. He said, "My mom's the best thing that's ever happened to me. I can't say why; I don't think explanations are needed. We get along very well because basically, I'm a mama's boy."
