Back then, officials listed the cause as "deferred", pending toxicology results. This week, however, examiners confirmed that a lethal mix of substances led to his untimely passing. On Tuesday, January 13, 2026, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed that Ethan Browne died from the combined effects of fent*nyl, meth*mphet*mine, and lidocaine toxicity. There was no foul play involved, and it was ruled as accidental.
Health experts say the combination of substances found in the late actor-model-musician's body is especially deadly. Each substance is designed to place intense strain on the body in different ways, and when taken together, they can exacerbate the vital systems. Synthetic opioids and stimulants are highly potent, and when taken together, they can prove fatal. With the medical examiner's records, it looks like the same thing happened in Ethan's case as well.
Who was Ethan Browne?
Ethan Browne, born on November 2, 1973, was the son of Jackson Brown and his late wife, Running on Empty singer Phyllis Major. Growing up in Los Angeles, he spent much of his early life in the public eye, thanks to his father's legendary career in music. He was only six months old when he accompanied Jackson to be featured on the cover of Rolling Stone. When he was only two, his mother, Phyllis Major, died from a barbiturate overdose, later ruled as suicide. After her death, Ethan had become the sole focus of Jackson's life.

Ethan grew up to be a model, actor, and singer, working for designers such as Isaac Mizrahi. He also had several acting roles, including appearances in the films Hackers (1995) starring Angelina Jolie and Raising Helen (2004) starring Kate Hudson, as well as a 2002 episode of the TV series Birds of Prey.
Following in his father's footsteps, Ethan also pursued a music career, founding the record label Spinside Records and eventually forming the musical duo, Alain Zane with Cat Colbert. The duo released their debut album, Right Before Your Eyes, in 2022. Off-screen, Ethan became a father when he was only 16 years old. Public records confirm that the late Hackers actor was married to his wife, Shayne Edwards, and has a daughter, Aaylah.
Ethan Browne’s death has once again highlighted the growing crisis of fentanyl and polysubstance drug use. While the Browne family has not commented on the medical findings, the loss of a once-bright, creative figure has renewed attention on the deadly risks substance use poses, even in celebrity circles.
