NHL star and longtime Chicago Blackhawks analyst, Troy Murray has passed away at 63, leaving the hockey world in mourning. The official social media handle of the Chicago Blackhawks confirmed his death on March 7, 2026, and paid tribute to the former player who had been associated with the franchise for more than four decades.

Additionally, the organisation's chairman and CEO, Danny Wirtz, has expressed his condolences on the news and mentioned the organisatio is "deeply heartbroken today as we (they) mourn the loss of Troy Murray, our (their) beloved 'Muzz'." As tributes continue to pour in for the former NHL star, here's what we know about the cause of his death and family. 

What caused Troy Murray's death? 

Troy Murray has passed away after fighting a long and brave battle with cancer. According to the reports cited by NHL.com, the former star player was diagnosed with the disease nearly four years ago on August 9, 2021. He tried his best to fight the disease and underwent chemotherapy treatments for the same. Despite his illness, Troy was active in the hockey community and continued to work as a radio analyst for the Chicago Blackhawks. Even while battling the illness, Troy showed a strong determination to stay connected to the sport that defined the majority of his life.

For those unaware, months after the former NHL player's December 2021 diagnosis, he returned to the broadcast booth for a Chicago Blackhawks game against the Washington Capitals alongside his partner, John Wiedeman. Subsequently, his fans and colleagues widely celebrated his comeback and admired his determination to live his life. During the same broadcast, Troy expressed his gratitude to the team and his supporters who supported him through the difficult phase of his treatment and highlighted how he was "very humbled".

Troy Murray's long and courageous battle with cancer 

Troy Murray fought with cancer for nearly five years; he continued to stay in touch with his game and team in any way possible. Consequently, along with his career legacy, the ex-NHL's player's friends and followers were inspired by his positive outlook on life. Danny Wirtz highlighted the same in his tribute message, noting that Troy never gave up on himself.

Who was Troy Murray's wife, Konnie Murray? 

Troy Murray is now survived by his wife, Konnie Murray, and their three children, Blake, Julia, and Phoebe. According to NBC 5 in Chicago, Troy Murray's family stayed by his side throughout his illness and final days. Meanwhile, tributes from fans and members of the hockey community have highlighted that he was also a devoted man. The Chicago Blackhawks organisation has also extended its condolences to Troy's family in his official statement.

Troy Murray enjoyed a successful career both on and off the ice. The Chicago Blackhawks chose him in the third round of the 1980 NHL Draft. Since then, he has played 15 seasons in the National Hockey League, making a special place in the hearts of his fans. Troy also suited up for several teams, including the Chicago Blackhawks, Winnipeg Jets, Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Colorado Avalanche. According to NHL.com, he recorded 584 points, including 230 goals and 354 assists, in 915 regular-season games. One of the high points in his career was in 1985-8t when he scored 45 goals and 99 points. Since his retirement from professional hockey, Troy shifted into broadcasting and joined the Blackhawks in 1998.
