The Supreme Court bench, which is headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, has taken up the death case of Noida resident, Twisha Sharma.
The Twisha Sharma death case has seen one of the latest developments. It has now been reported that the Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the case of the former model and actress, Twisha Sharma. The deceased died by suicide in her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12, 2026. The Twisha Sharma case will have a hearing in front of the Supreme Court on May 25, 2026.
A report by the NDTV revealed that a Supreme Court bench, which is headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, has taken up the death case of Noida resident, Twisha Sharma. Her family has held up her husband, advocate, Samarth Singh and her in-laws, Giribala Singh, responsible in Bhopal. The Supreme Court has listed the hearing for May 25, 2026. Apart from the Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, who will head the case, the bench will also have Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul M Pancholi.
The report further mentioned that the Twisha Sharma case has been listed under the title called 'alleged institutional bias and procedural discrepancies in the unnatural death of a young girl at her matrimonial home'. The Supreme Court will deeply look into all the allegations of the reported procedural discrepancy and the institutional biases in Twisha's death case.
Twisha Sharma's husband, Samarth Singh, has been sent for a seven-day police remand by the Bhopal court. Investigators are being given time to question Samarth related to the way he conducted himself after the death of his wife, Twisha and the circumstances related to the case. Twisha's dad, brother and their relatives had raised concerns related to the alleged bulldozing of the legal system by Samarth and his family.
The court has also directed that Samarth Singh has to surrender his passport. Earlier, a lookout notice for Samarth was issued as he was absconding, reportedly for 10 days, since Twisha died. Her demise has sent shockwaves through the country and has raised questions related to dowry practices that take place in India. The Madhya Pradesh government had spoken about a CBI probe into the matter.
Twisha Sharma's mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, a retired judge, has received a third and final notice after she failed to appear for questioning. The Madhya Pradesh High Court had also issued a notice to her, seeking for her reply by May 25, 2026. Te Madhya Pradesh Police has moved the High Court seeking cancellation of Giribala's anticipatory bail. The state had argued that a lower court had granted Twisha Sharma's mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, bail in a mechanical manner, on the same day when the FIR was registered.
The report by NDTV stated that the state cited Section 118 of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. It argued that if a woman dies due to unnatural circumstances within seven years of marriage, the legal presumption operates against the in-laws and husband. It is worth noting that Trisha died by suicide within five months of her marriage. The gravity of the allegations, along with WhatsApp chats, medical evidence, and family statements, was not taken into account. The cancellation application, filed before the Madhya Pradesh High Court, claimed that the sessions court did not examine the WhatsApp messages exchanged between Trisha and her parents.
