The latest series, FX's Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, shows the journey of one of the most iconic couples. Ever since the show got released, JFK Jr. and Carolyn’s highly publicised relationship has once again become a topic of discussion. Created by Ryan Murphy, the show features many elements which are inspired by true events. The show also highlights Carolyn’s fashion statement. Many of her looks feature a peculiar necklace she wears with her father’s band on it.
The show features all the nuances of the real-life couple, JFK Jr. and his wife, Carolyn Bessette. Despite being a fashionista herself, Carolyn had the habit of not wearing any jewellery. But in episode 4, Sarah Pidgeon, who plays the role of Carolyn Bessette, was seen wearing a wedding band hung around a chain necklace, which she said belonged to her father.
In the episode, Carolyn reveals the reason behind wearing her father’s band around her neck. It so happens that the morning after Carolyn spends the night at JFK Jr.'s loft, he points at the wedding band, and that’s when Carolyn reveals that it belonged to her father. In the same episode, she reveals the reason behind wearing the same and says:
“I don't wear this because I love my father. I wear this to remind me that what he seemed to be, he wasn't. And anyone else who seems as wonderful as he did, they're probably not either. I wear it to remind me to be careful, and I am.”
Though the series revealed Carolyn Bessette wearing her father’s wedding band, in real life she wore the band which belonged to her mother, Ann. As per an article published in WWD, Carolyn’s parents, William and Ann, got a divorce when she was just 8, and throughout her adolescence, William was absent.
However, as per jewellery historian Marion Fasel, the band which Carolyn wore sometimes belonged to her mother and not her father’s. The same detail is shared in Elizabeth Beller's book, Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. As per Fasel, the change made by the makers regarding the band is done to reveal Carolyn's reservations about her and JFK Jr.'s blossoming romance.
Not just this, author, Sunita Kumar Nair also accounts the same in her book, CBK: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy: A Life in Fashion and reveals that Carolyn’s jewellery included her mother’s wedding band, which she used to wear in college and often joked about ‘dipping it in holy water’.
The show Love Story, released on February 12, 2026, claims to tell the story of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. However, many fans have been wondering whether everything shown on the show is true. Well, it is worth mentioning that most details shown in Love Story are true, and it happened in real life with John and Carolyn; however, there are a few moments which may or may not be true, as there is no evidence of those moments.
John F. Kennedy Jr. was one of the most handsome men in America. Carolyn Bessette first met John F Kennedy Jr in the early '90s, when he came to buy a suit at Calvin Klein. Carolyn attended to the VIP clients. JFK was smitten by her beauty and couldn’t help falling in love with her. He reportedly pursued Carolyn; however, she refused to commit because she did not believe JFK Jr. was serious.
Although the duo dated briefly in 1994, they separated after JFK Jr. reconciled with his ex, Daryl Hannah, that same year. Although John F. Kennedy Jr. had resolved his issues with Daryl Hannah, the relationship did not last long and ended in a permanent split in 1994. Following the separation, John and Carolyn started dating again.
Soon, JFK proposed to Carolyn, and she accepted. In September 1996, JFK Jr. and Carolyn got married in a secret ceremony attended by only 30 people, including family and friends. Though they were madly-in-love with one another, they still kept their marriage hidden from the media. Journalist and author, Carole Radziwill described the wedding as “one of the best-kept secrets of modern times”.
JFK Jr. and Carolyn's relationship took a tragic end in 1999 when they met with a fatal plane crash. On April 28, 1999, he purchased a plane from Air Bound Aviation and travelled with his wife, Carolyn and sister-in-law, Lauren Bessette. But soon, the plane was reported missing. On July 21, 1999, Officials recovered their bodies, aircraft debris and a black suitcase belonging to Carolyn from the Atlantic Ocean.
