The couple, who recently got married is starring in Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic The Odyssey. The film features Matt Damon as ‘Greek King Odysseus’, Zendaya as ‘Athena’ and many other leading names.
In an interview with Wired, Tom Holland, who plays the character of ‘Telemachus’, jokingly talked about his wife Zendaya’s on-screen love interest Matt Damon in The Odyssey. When asked ‘Did Athena love Odysseus romantically?’, Tom replied, “No because she’s married to me.” Hearing Tom’s answer, Damon, who was also present at the interview, laughed and said, ‘Yep. Good answer.”
After the Trojan War, all the Greek heroes have returned home, but 'Odysseus' has not and he has been absent for 20 years from his home. In Ithaca, Odysseus’ wife 'Penelope' (Anne Hathaway) and their son 'Telemachus' (Tom Holland) are at home and fending off suitors for 'Penelope', including 'Antinous' (Robert Pattinson). On the other hand, 'Athena' (Zendaya) appears in 'Odysseus' visions as he attempts to return to his home on Ithaca.
The Odyssey is expected to generate hundreds of millions of dollars, as Christopher Nolan’s last film, Oppenheimer, scored USD 975 million at the global box office. After Oppenheimer won seven Oscars on 13 nominations in 2024, The Odyssey is also expected to be up as a frontrunner for the 2027 Academy Awards.
The film includes, Matt Damon as ‘Greek King Odysseus’, Tom Holland as ‘Odysseus’ son Telemachus’, Anne Hathaway as ‘Odysseus’ wife Penelope’, Robert Pattinson as ‘Odysseus’ suitor Antinous’, and Zendaya as ‘Greek goddess Athena’. The Odyssey, also stars Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, Corey Hawkins, John Leguizamo, Jon Bernthal, Samantha Morton, Benny Safdie and Travis Scott.
During a recent interview, Tom Holland shared an interesting detail that convinced him to say ‘yes’ to Christopher Nolan’s movie. Tom revealed that his ladylove, Zendaya jokingly threatened to leave him if he did not accept the role. As Tom was expected to start shooting for Spider-Man, the same day when filming of The Odyssey had to start, he was not convinced for starring in The Odyssey.
However, Tom managed to complete both the films. Revealing how Zendaya convinced Tom to sign The Odyssey, the Spider Man star recalled:
“To be honest, when I got home after our meeting, I sat down with Z (Zendaya) and was like, ‘I’ve been offered this movie'. And she was like, ‘By who?’ And I was like, ‘It’s the big one.’ And she was like, ‘Chris?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, it’s Chris Nolan.’ And then we had Spider-Man that was literally scheduled to go the same day that we would start shooting. Z said, ‘I’ll leave you if you don’t do The Odyssey'. Here I am."
The Odyssey is the 5th collaboration between the recently married couple, Zendaya and Tom Holland. The other four films are of the Spider-Man franchise. After years of rumours of love and marriage, reports stated that Tom and Zendaya had secretly tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in 2026. Though the couple has not shared details about their wedding, but their love-filled anecdotes for one another is simply unmissable.
