However, out of all his relationships, his marriage to Nicole Kidman was the longest as it lasted for nearly 11 years.
In the year 2005, Tom Cruise was interviewed by Peter Overton for 60 Minutes Australia. During the interview, the reporter was trying to cross the line by questioning the actor about his ex-wife, Nicole, with whom he had a divorce in 2001. Peter asked Tom, if Kidman was 'the love of (his) life'? To which he responded, “What do you mean? We raise children. How do you answer that question? She's someone that... I plan on getting married again."
Going further in the interview, when the host quips him again saying that, ‘But Nicole was a major part of your life, the love of your life at the time?" Tom responded that he loved Nicole a lot and only wishes happiness in her life. The actor also hoped that Nicole finds love and get married again.
The turning point in the interview came when the interviewer asked Tom about the 'parenting relationship' that he and Nicole share with one another. Miffed with the grilling, Tom cut short the interview and gave a befitting reply to the host, Peter. Without mincing his words, Tom said:
“Listen, here's the thing, you're stepping over the line now. You're stepping over the line, you know you are. Take responsibility for what you want to know. Don't say 'other people'. This is a conversation I'm having with you right now. So I'm telling you right now, put your manners back in."
It was in 1990 when Nicole and Tom fell in love with each other during the making of Days of Thunder. The duo had a wedding in the same year and the couple soon adopted two kids, Isabella and Connor. In 2000, Tom and Nicole filed for divorce, marking the end of a decade-long marriage that shocked their huge fan base. The couple’s divorce was finalised in 2001. At the time, Tom and Nicole’s rep revealed the reason for their split as 'irreconcilable differences'.
After their split, there were many reports that suggested the possible reasons for their split. Some even stated that it was Tom who initiated the separation from Nicole. Sources close to the actress also stated that Nicole was against the idea of a separation as she was head-over-heels in love with Tom.
She once confessed that their heartbreaking split after 10 years of marriage was completely unexpected. As per the legal documents, Nicole pleaded with Tom to reconsider the divorce and instead take marriage counselling. Since Tom had made up his mind about the same, the couple eventually parted ways after seven months of legal battle.
