Katie was spotted holding hands with New York-based artist Jason Bard Yarmosky, sparking curiosity about her past life once again. Here's what we know about her marriage fallout with Tom Cruise, including reports of a 9.8 million NDA and Scientology factors.

Inside Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' alleged 9.8 million NDA row

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes had a highly publicized and messy split. After about four years of their separation, media outlet Radar Online shared that he paid Katie a total of USD 9.8 million, including USD 4.8 million in child support and USD 5 million for herself. The reports also claimed that Katie never spoke about Tom since their divorce because the USD 9.8 million that he paid her was allegedly in lieu of her silence regarding the matter.

The report remains unverified, as neither the Mission: Impossible star nor his ex-wife has commented on it. However, it should be noted that Katie never got candid about why her marriage to Tom fell apart. Although that doesn't prove the NDA claims in the report, it doesn't rule out the possibility and leaves room for fans to speculate.

What led to Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' split? Scientology reportedly played a part in it

Besides the alleged USD 9.8 million NDA, Scientology was a topic that was widely associated with the Tom-Katie split drama. It was widely considered the actual reason for the former couple's divorce and was reportedly almost confirmed by Tom Cruise himself. In 2013, while testifying in a defamation case Tom filed against Bauer Media, who claimed he abandoned his daughter, the actor opened up about the Scientology factor.

For the unversed, Scientology is a religious system followed by Tom Cruise, which does not focus on a traditional God or Supreme Being. Instead, it teaches that everyone is an immortal spiritual being called thetan, who holds immense power but has lost awareness of it while creating the universe. Tom and Katie's daughter, Suri Noelle, was at first introduced to Scientology by him; however, she opted out before her parents' divorce.

It led to the rumors that Tom abandoned his child, as Scientology deems anyone who leaves the faith a "Suppressive Person" and encourages remaining members in the same family to cut them off. During the defamation suit hearing, Tom admitted that Scientology did play a role in his 2012 divorce from Katie Holmes during a legal deposition. He also mentioned his daughter didn't need protection due to his religion and stated:

"Did she [Katie Holmes] say that [about Scientology]? That was one of the assertions, yes...There is no need to protect my daughter from my religion."

After Katie and Tom's divorce, he rarely met Suri. Reports stated that the actor hadn't met his daughter, Suri, in 11 years. Their last public appearance together was in April 2013, and according to multiple sources, it was Tom who chose not to see Suri at the time. In response, Suri chose to drop her father's last name and adopt her mother's middle name, Noelle.
