The Girlfriend is a 2025 Telugu-language romantic drama, directed by Rahul Ravindran and it stars Rashmika Mandanna as 'Bhooma Devi' and Dheekshith Shetty as her college boyfriend, 'Vikram'. The film also stars Anu Emmanuel, Rao Ramesh, Rohini and more. The film begins with 'Bhooma', who moves to Hyderabad to pursue her Master’s degree in Literature. In the first few days, she meets 'Vikram', a confident and charming young man.
'Bhooma' and 'Vikram' soon became friends and gradually fell in love. During the start of their relationship, things looked perfect as they went on dates, spent hours together and enjoyed. However, happiness is short-lived as things begin to change. After a while, 'Vikram' starts to show signs of insecurity and possessiveness. While 'Bhooma' tries to avoid it, the possessiveness turns into control, as 'Vikram' starts deciding everything for her.
Slowly and gradually, 'Bhooma' starts to lose her confidence and becomes emotionally dependent on her boyfriend. While she is dealing with this, 'Bhooma' joins a theatre club and she is finally able to feel the freedom. However, 'Vikram' becomes more controlling now. Eventually, 'Bhooma' feels trapped in her relationship and tries to question everything.
Towards the end of the Telugu film, The Girlfriend, 'Bhooma' finally reaches her breaking point and decides to leave, not just 'Vikram's' possessive nature but also her father's controlling behaviour. 'Bhooma' eventually finds the courage to break out of the torturous cycle she has been in for years. Towards the end, viewers see 'Bhooma' focusing on her career and as the credits begin to roll, 'Bhooma' finally begins writing again. The writer in her, which was silenced years ago is growing again. 'Bhooma' returns to her true self and regains her confidence.
When the film was released in theatres on November 7, 2025, multiple viewers had appreciated the narrative and Rashmika’s strong performance. One user had commented, "The girlfriend, whole movie is very good. Rashmika acted very well in the movie, this is her career best acting in a movie."
