The rumours have also been rife that his wife no longer lives with him. Now, as Sangeetha has filed for divorce, Vijay's rumours with Trisha Krishnan has gained traction.

Now, as he is set to contest the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections in 2026, he has landed in another controversy as his wife claimed that he is having an extramarital affair with an actress. Coming back to Thalapathy Vijay's wife, Sangeetha's reason for filing for divorce after 27 years of marriage is his infidelity. In the plea, she cited the reason as his extramarital affair with an actress, which has strained their relationship with his wife, and she now wants a divorce. As per the court documents, his wife discovered Vijay's infidelity in 2021, but despite repeated assurances from him, he continued the illicit relationship. This has caused a rift in his family.
As details about Sangeetha's divorce filing go public, netizens rushed to link him up with Trisha. The duo's pictures are being widely circulated. For those who don't know, Vijay and Trisha first met during their first film, Ghilli, in 2004. They have been part of many films such as Thirupaachi (2005), Aathi (2006) and Kuruvi (2008). After which, they stopped signing films together, but reunited after 15 years for Leo in 2023. The two are considered the most-loved couple on-screen with record-breaking hits.
The divorce plea clearly mentions that after Vijay's wife found out about his affair, he emotionally withdrew from her, and started treating her with 'verbal disdain' and even subjected her to constructive desertion. She was forced to live separately from him within the matrimonial home. Meanwhile, Vijay kept travelling abroad to attend public events with the said actress.
For the unversed, Vijay met Sangeetha for the first time in 1996. She was a Sri Lankan Hindu who was brought up in Britain. Sangeetha was Vijay's big fan, and she left her home in the UK to meet her idol in Chennai. The meeting changed everything for Vijay and Sangeetha. The relaitonship which was of a fan and a star, turned into something significant. Despite their religious differences, the two got married under the Special Marriage Act in 1998.
For the unversed, Vijay was born into a Christian family, and Sangeetha was raised as a Hindu, but their love won over all odds. The couple has been married for 27 years and is blessed with two children, Jason Sanjay, who is 25 years old, and Divya Saasha, who is 20 years old.
During the start of their relationship, Sangeetha would often accompany Vijay at his promotional events and award functions. But with time, she stopped it altogether and started keeping a low profile. She also remained absent from Vijay's political rallies to float TVK.
