Tatyana is one of the most loved American actresses, singers, and activists. Beyond her success as a star, Tatyana is known for her honest stance on social issues. The Harvard graduate once testified about Black maternal health–and how the life-or-death issue impacted her family. Tatyana talked about her traumatic childbirth experience, sending chills to her fans.
On the Pod Meets World podcast, Tatyana recalled her traumatic childbirth experience during the birth of her first son, Edward. When she asked the OB-GYN about the position of her child, he said, ‘I could hang from the lights if that made me happy.’ Such a callous response from the doctor made her feel uncomfortable.
Soon, her healthy pregnancy quickly escalated into "obstetric violence." Not only was her birth plan ignored, but Tatyana was physically restrained during labor. Her baby had been crowned for hours, but they used a suction, a plunger-type apparatus, and tried four times to take the baby out. According to Tatyana, the suction aggressively popped off the baby’s head again and again, and she knew that they would hurt her baby.
When Tatyana realized how her child’s life was in danger, she requested a C-section, and her world was turned upside down. Recalling how the doctors’ dangerous step left her shaken, Tatyana recalled:
“One of the doctors wordlessly pushed my baby back inside me in an extremely dangerous procedure called the Zavanelli maneuver. I began to convulse and shake. Then, my world went dark.
In the podcast, Tatyana pointed out the inconsistencies in her medical records, noting that her son's position appeared to shift dramatically without explanation. Explaining the same, she shared:
“In my records, it shows that he goes from the lowest station, I saw his hair, I touched his hair, to the highest station and it doesn't say how that happened. It's an incredibly dangerous thing that they did; they could have snapped his neck, but this is after hours of them holding me down.”
According to Ali, the medical staff intervened in such a way that it put both her and her child at serious risk. However, the complications didn't end at delivery. Edward was placed in the neonatal intensive care unit, where he reportedly struggled with basic functions, including urination, for several days.
A pediatric urologist later connected those issues to the traumatic birth. Ali and her husband, along with their baby, left the hospital in the middle of the night. Revealing what the pediatrician told her, Ali shared:
“It was a pediatric urologist who was the only one who came to my side and said, ‘I saw what happened during your birth, the things that resulted in this emergency C-section.”
Ali said her traumatic delivery experience led her to raise awareness of the discrimination Black women face during pregnancy, childbirth, and other medical treatments.
