Sangeetha appeared before the court through video-conferencing when her plea was taken up. She then told the court that she no longer wished to pursue the case as she didn’t want a separation from Vijay. Sangeetha then submitted the reasons for not pursuing her case. According to official court sources, following Sangeetha’s submission, the court disposed of the petition as withdrawn.

Why did Sangeetha file for divorce from Vijay?

On February 27, 2026, news of Thalapathy Vijay and Sangeetha Sornalingam’s separation surfaced online. According to a report by The Indian Express, Vijay’s wife has filed for divorce at the Chengalpattu Family Court. Her petition was filed under Section (1)(a), (b), (d) and Sections 36 & 37 of the Special Marriage Act, 1954.

Sangeetha’s petition stated that she discovered an alleged affair involving Vijay and a female actress in April 2021. For the unversed, the duo reportedly tied the knot on August 25, 1999, in Chennai. It was an interfaith marriage as Vijay is a Christian and his wife, Sangeetha, is a Hindu. Sangeetha, in her petition, also stated that despite many assurances, Vijay continued his illicit relationship. The petition can be read as:

“The respondent continued travelling abroad and attending public events with the said actress. The actress regularly posted photographs of these outings on social media. The respondent neither denied nor objected to these posts, thereby tacitly endorsing them. These posts widely circulated, causing repeated humiliation to the petitioner and the children."

On April 20, 2026, the Chengalpattu Family Welfare Court in Tamil Nadu postponed the hearing to June 15, 2026. On June 15, 2026, the local court adjourned the proceedings of the case and scheduled it for August 7, 2026. Sangeetha’s petition reportedly alleged adultery, mental cruelty, neglect and desertion, and states that the marriage had "irretrievably broken down."

The filing further claimed Vijay increasingly distanced himself from family life, excluded her from his professional and public engagements, and withdrew emotional, physical and financial support.

After the news of his divorce, the actor attended a Women’s Meet. During the event, Vijay finally broke his silence on the ongoing divorce drama. Addressing the crowd, the Jana Nayagan actor told them not to worry about the recent problems surrounding him. He was quoted as saying:

“Don’t worry about the recent problems surrounding me. Those issues are not worth your time. I will take care of them and myself. What hurts me the most is seeing you feel sad or stressed because of my problems."

Well, we hope Vijay and Sangeetha sail through the difficult period and come out stronger.
