Veteran Malayalam star, filmmaker, and screenwriter, Sreenivasan, was cremated with full state honours at his home in Kadanand.
Veteran Malayalam star, filmmaker and screenwriter, Sreenivasan passed away at the age of 69 on December 20, 2025. The actor took his last breath at a hospital in Kochi, where he was undergoing treatment for his prolonged illness. Now, in a piece of heartbreaking news, Sreenivasan has been laid to rest at his residence in Kandanad, Udayamperoor. Sreenivasan's cremation rites took place on December 21, 2025.
Sreenivasan's cremation was attended by an array of political leaders, movie personalities, his fans, and admirers that reflected the respect and admiration Sreenivasan received over the past five decades serving in the industry. Sreenivasan reportedly was being taken for dialysis when he passed away. Sreenivasan's body was taken to his home at Kadanand after it was kept at the Town Hall for the fans to pay their last respect. The actor was cremated with full state honours at his residence.
For the past couple of years, Sreenivasan has been fighting with regular health issues. Mourners came to bid goodbye to the famous filmmaker. There was Sreenivasan's good friend and long-term co-star, Mohanlal, along with Tamil star, Suriya, actor and director, Renji Panicker, and many more who had come to pay their final respect.
The scene at Sreenivasan's final rites was heartbreaking. As his friends, colleagues, and fans came to honour the man whose work, both in front and behind the camera, defined his realism in Malayalam cinema. Sreenivasan has left behind Vimala, his wife, two sons, Vineeth Sreenivasan, who is a filmmaker, singer, and Dhyan Sreenivasan, an actor. Sreenivasan also has two daughters-in-law's, Divya and Arpita. Sreenivasan was born in Paatyam, Kannur, and his movie, Manimuzhakkam, marked the start of his illustrious journey in the movie industry.
Sreenivasan had collaborated with directors such as Sathyan Anthikad and Priyadarshan and together had created 32 relevant movies which have been prevalent in the Malayalam industry. Sreenivasan's movies showcased his philosophy of satire, social commentary, and showcasing the ordinary protagonist. Sreenivasan is best known for movies such as Sanghaganam, TP Balagopalan MA, Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam, Chithram, Akkare Akkare Akkare, Nadodikkattu, His Highness Abdullah to name a few. His body of work also includes Thalayanamanthram, Sandesham, Chandralekha, Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala, Friends, Udayananu Tharam, Arabikkatha, Oru Naal Varum, Odaruthammava, Aalariyam, Gandhinagar 2nd Street, Pattanapravesham, Varavelpu, Midhunam, Mazhayethum Munpe, Azhakiya Ravanan, Oru Maravathoor Kanavu, Katha Parayumpol, and Njan Prakashan.
It was in the 1970s when Sreenivasan made his debut and made his presence felt in the Malayalam movie industry. It is impossible to talk about all the great movies he has done but Sreenivasan was called as a comedian who was known to play diversified roles. He was also known to make his fans laugh and cry in the same movie, such as in Vadakku Nokki Yanthram where he played the role of a man who had severe inferiority complex related to his looks. Well, in Ponmuttayidunna Thaaravu, Sreenivasan played 'Bhaskaran' who would make you root for him. The lower middle-class man is shown to have been cheated on by his girlfriend. You do feel sorry for the character of 'Bhaskaran,' but he is not as innocent as he is shown.
