Famous dancer, and choreographer, Shakti Mohan opened up about the decision to live life without marriage and moving out of her home.
Shakti Mohan, the winner of Dance India Dance in 2010, has been living life on her own terms without taking the pressure of marriage and society's stereotypes. While Shakti Mohan's other two sisters, Neeti Mohan and Mukti Mohan, are happily married, she doesn't feel the need to tie the knot. But she faced a lot of questions and still continues to face the same on her marriage.
Women are evolving, and this is the first generation that is earning, taking care of their parents, and even following their dreams. While society still tries to box them, they are flying free, and Shakti Mohan is the biggest example of it. Shakti Mohan not only established herself as a dancer and TV personality by appearing on hit reality shows, but she also chose not to get married.
Recently, Shakti appeared on Siddharth Kannan's YouTube talk show and revealed that her decision to move out of her parents' home was met with strong resistance from them. They didn't get her idea, but she explained to them that she needs to explore the freedom on her own and does not want to get married for the sake of it. She revealed that a lot of people ask her why she wasn't getting married. Her mother often tells her to find someone and make a boyfriend, while her father keeps asking if she has met someone. She said:
"It's seen like a bad thing agar apki shaadi nahi hui or ap ghar se nikal rahe ho. Kyo ghar nahi hui toh nahi jana byaah karke nikalna hai. Toh I explained to my parents ki jab mai 7 saal ki thi toh apne mere ko boarding school mein bhej diya. Bahut courage krke mei ne unko bola. Mai ne unko kaha it is not like ki I don't love you, but let me expereince this. Then they fully supported me."
Shakti Mohan further revealed that she is enjoying life, working and running her own studio. Then she was asked whether she didn't feel maternal; she revealed that she didn't. She is a great aunt to her nephew, but she doesn't want to have children. When the host asked her if she was single, Shakti nodded. She was further questioned about whether she had ever been hurt in love, and she agreed.
Explaining what happened, Shakti Mohan revealed that the boy cheated on her and when she found, she broke up with him. But since both families knew, the boy kept pursuing her as he would come to her home. And seeing all this, her mother told her that boys are like this, and she should let it pass. But Shakti was adamant that she didn't want someone like this. She was quoted as saying:
"I was cheated on in a relationship. I immediately broke up. But my mother told me that he is a nice boy, we had three years of relationship, and that I should let it go. She told me boys are like this. You accept it. But I told her that I will not accept this in my life. If boys are like this, I don’t want boys in my life."
Talking about Shakti Mohan's professional front, she runs her own dance academy, Nritya Shakti. It offers training and online programs, and several celebrities' children also take training under her. Apart from this, Shakti Mohan has also worked on films such as Padmaavat and Shamshera.
