As our leads follow the tangled web of conspiracies, hidden motives, and carefully planted clues tied to the cryptic phrase "Seven Dials". And at the centre of it all is a young woman 'Bundle' (Mia McKenna-Bruce), unwilling to accept easy explanations. Written by Chris Chibnall, the series is a new take on Agatha Christie's 1929 novel, The Seven Dials Mystery, which expands far beyond a single death, reprising the story with darker plot twists. Warning: Spoilers ahead!

The mysterious death of 'Gerry' and 'Ronnie'

Netflix released Seven Dials on January 15, 2026 (ET). The story follows 'Bundle' investigating the sudden demise of 'Gerry Wade', a young diplomat at the Foreign Office. The latter had a special connection with 'Bundle', having served in World War I alongside her brother 'Tommy', who died in the war. This made the demise even more painful, as 'Gerry' had hinted that he planned to propose to her. While others quickly accepted that he had committed s**cide, 'Bundle' is suspicious and finds alarm clocks on his mantelpiece, which we soon discover were not put there by his friends.

Another striking realisation is that there are only seven alarms, rather than the original eight, from a prank, suggesting someone had altered the scene. However, 'Bundle' is determined to find the truth and begins her own investigation, drawing attention to 'Superintendent Battle' (Martin Freeman) from Scotland Yard. While he tries to discourage her involvement, suggesting he has his own methods, 'Bundle' is adamant and uses her ability to connect with people to further her investigations.

Nonetheless, 'Bundle' is at another crossroad when another death leaves them shocked. This time it is 'Gerry's' colleague and 'Bundle's' trusted friend, 'Ronnie Devereux' (Nabhaan Rizwan). He pieces certain things together. However, before he can update 'Bundle', he is shot on the roadside. 'Battle' finds him on his way, but unfortunately, he dies soon after, his final words being:

'Bundle' at first assumes he wanted her to tell 'Jimmy Thesiger' about the 'Seven Dials' but soon realises that both the deaths are not only connected but a part of something much larger. She recalls 'Seven Dials' also appeared in 'Gerry's' unfinished letter to his sister referencing a mysterious society meeting.

What is 'Dr Matip's' formula?

As the investigation unfolds, 'Bundle' finds out about 'Dr Cyril Matip's' (Nyasha Hatendi) formula. It is a process to make steel nearly indestructible, with immense potential in industry and warfare. The formula has gained the attention of politicians, spies, and international conspirators, all eager to exploit it for strategic or financial gain. 'Matip' is soon invited to Wyvern Abbey, the country estate of 'George Lomax' (Alex Macqueen), Under-Secretary at the Foreign Office, aiming at keeping the innovation under British control.

However, shortly after the meeting, 'Loraine Wade' (Ella-Rae Smith), 'Gerry's' half-sister, infiltrates the estate, drugs 'Matip', and steals the formula. 'Jimmy Thesiger' (Edward Bluemel), soon appearing to be 'Bundle's' ally, stages a distraction, including shooting himself in the arm to stage an attack. Once 'Loraine' discovers the same, she flees the scene, while 'Bundle' pursues her alongside 'Jimmy' and 'Bill Eversleigh' (Hughie O'Donnell).

Who killed 'Gerry' and 'Ronnie'?

The pieces finally begin to come together inside one of the train carriages, and it is revealed that 'Loraine' poisoned 'Gerry' during the party at the 'Chimneys'. However, she didn't intend to kill her half-brother, but impulse and determination to protect 'Matip's' formula led to his accidental death, as she feared 'Gerry' might uncover the truth. 'Jimmy' is further revealed as 'Loraine's' accomplice and the man who killed 'Ronnie'.

Who is the mastermind behind it all?

'Jimmy' further reveals that he is only a pawn in a bigger game, and the real mastermind was waiting for the formula in first class. In a shocking turn of events, 'Bundle' finds out that the real culprit is none other than her own mother, 'Lady Caterham'. It is further discovered that 'Gerry's' death was never part of their plan, and the 'Chimney's' party was intended to get information on 'Matip's' formula.

It's also revealed that 'Caterham's' objective roots from financial survival and a resentment towards a country that took her son and husband. The confrontation between the mother and daughter is intimate and charged, ending with the arrest of 'Lady Caterham', 'Loraine' and 'Jimmy'.

What is the 'Seven Dial' Society?

Throughout the investigation, 'Seven Dials' remains a mysterious clue linked to the crimes. However, what really is it? Well, after the arrest and securing 'Matip's' formula, 'Bundle' is taken at gunpoint to a 'Seven Dial' society by 'Alfred', a former estate employee. There, the society leader is revealed to be 'Number Seven', who is none other than 'Superintendent Battle'. Nonetheless, the society is not sinister; instead, it is an alliance that protects the country during political instability, safeguards sensitive information, and ensures weapons don't land in the wrong hands.

'Bundle' learns that her father was 'Number Three' and died on a mission for the society. 'Battle' acknowledges her growth and skills, and she is offered her father's position, which she accepts. By the end, 'Bundle' becomes more cautious and discerning while not losing the part of her that sees good in others.
