Savannah Guthrie was married to Mark Orchard from 2005 to 2009. Orchard was a fellow journalist and had worked with the BBC and Al Jazeera. Savannah kept details of her ugly divorce private and never shared who called it quits in their relationship. However, years later, she made a rare comment on her marriage with her first husband. On the Reclaiming With Monica Lewinsky podcast, when the host asked whether she had been married before, Savannah noted that her divorce is the only thing she has never wanted to talk about.
Savannah clarified that the topic is off limits as she doesn't want to touch the ghosts of the past. Savannah further stated that some of the details are too personal and too embarrassing, and this is the reason she likes to keep the topic away from her present life. The famous host also added that it took her years to recover from the heartbreak of her first failed marriage. However, she doesn't want to blame anyone but she also doesn't want to get into the details of it. On the same podcast, Guthrie added that while writing her book, she realised some topics were simply off-limits and she didn't want to discuss them. She added that her publisher also never pushed her to share details of her first marriage. She said:
"It was horrible and sad, and it broke my heart, and it took me years to recover. And I'm not blaming anyone, but I don't really want to get into it."
After her ugly divorce, love knocked on the doors of Savannah's heart again the same year. Savannah Guthrie met Michael Feldman in October 2008 while she had stepped away from her first marriage. The Today host attended Michael's 40th birthday party and was there with a mutual friend. After which, Savannah got officially divorced in 2009. Later the same year, she started dating Michael Feldman, who was a political consultant at that time. According to Savannah, she met a political consultant at a party who made her laugh. It was enough for her to fall in love again.
Talking about their engagement, they had a funny story: the two had broken up the same day Feldman got down on one knee and proposed to Savannah. In 2019, she revealed that they were on a vacation in Turks and Caicos. They were at a point when they didn't think that they would get married. However, during the trip, Savannah asked Feldman to decide whether to marry or end things. However, Feldman told her to spend the day with him, as he had already made up his mind and was going to propose to her. Guthrie recalled:
"It got to the point where no one thought we were ever going to get married — including us, especially including me. We were kind of at that point in life where it was like, we're either going to have to decide to get married or we're just going to have to love each other but let each other go."
Feldman convinced her to spend the day with her. While she was worrying about their future, he had already bought her a ring. As the sun went down on the shores, Michael proposed to Savannah, and she said yes within 0.2 seconds. The host announced her big news on the show, Today and joked that their families have been in-laws for years, but they were just waiting for them to catch up. Guthrie and Feldman were married in March 2014 in an intimate ceremony with around 80 to 90 guests. After exchanging their vows, the two announced their first pregnancy as Savannah was expecting her first child. Savannah and Michael's family has two children — one daughter and a son.
