While officials look into the events surrounding his passing, let's take a look at the cause of his death and his own health struggle that led him to become a disability-rights activist.
News of RJ Mitte's death broke on October 12, 2026. The actor's management company confirmed that the Breaking Bad star had passed away at the age of 34. For the unversed, RJ rose to fame for his role as the son of Bryan Cranston's 'Walter White' on the Emmy-winning series. He became a disability-rights activist from his experiences living with cerebral palsy.
Talking about what led to his death, according to initial reports, RJ Mitte died by suicide in Brownsville, Texas. A report by The Associated Press stated that the Cameron County Justice of the Peace, Cyndi Hinojosa, declared Mitte dead at about 1:30 p.m. local time on Monday, October 12, 2026, at what she believed was his home. Cyndi further revealed that an autopsy will be performed to further find the manner of his death.
For those who are not aware, RJ Mitte apparently took his own life hours after his fiancée, Kennedy Suarez's birthday. The news of his death has left his fans heartbroken. In a statement, his rep said:
"It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate RJ Mitte."
RJ Mitte was born on August 21, 1992, and later adopted by Roy Frank Mitte Jr. and Dyna Mitte when he was just a few weeks old. While there is no information on his birth parents, it was revealed that he was delivered by an emergency C-section and was not breathing at the time of his birth. This led to permanent brain damage from hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
However, this was not the end of his health struggles. At three years old, he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. To straighten his feet, the doctors put his legs in a cast for six months. He was later fitted with leg braces and used crutches throughout most of his childhood. While sports and exercise made him stronger and he no longer needed walking devices, he became a vocal advocate for disability rights.
While his own body healed, responsibilities on his shoulders increased when he was just 13. His mom, Dyan Mitte, was in an accident which left her paralyzed for six years. Despite the difficulties, he never looked for his biological parents. In a conversation with The Sydney Morning Herald, he spoke about wanting to learn about his biological medical history if he needed to, but other than that, he asserted he didn't need anything else. He was quoted as saying:
"I've never felt the need to track my birth mother. Medically, I'd like to know my family history, but until I feel that need, I have enough family and friends. I don't need any more."
Talking about his career, RJ Mitte's Breaking Bad character also had cerebral palsy, which built a platform for disability awareness and inclusion due to the popularity of the series. It ran from 2008-13 and garnered 58 Primetime Emmy nominations, winning 16, including two for Outstanding Drama Series. The actor was part of the cast that won the then-SAG Awards' Ensemble in a Drama Series trophy in 2014, having been nominated in the category the previous two years.
According to IMDb, his most recent project was the indie pic Talking to Strangers, alongside Lin Yin. The drama had a red-carpet screening less than two weeks ago on September 30, 2026, at the Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills. RJ Mitte was also known for his work in Switched at Birth, Now Apocalypse, and The Guardians of Justice (Will Save You!).
RIP, RJ Mitte.
