Two days after the Delhi HC urged Sunjay Kapur's family to consider mediation in their inheritance dispute, Priya Sachdev Kapur has filed a defamation suit against her late husband's sister.
It has been eight months since Sunjay Kapur's tragic demise on June 12, 2025. However, the late industrialist's family has been embroiled in a legal battle over his estate, valued at over Rs. 30,000 crore. After months of back-and-forth and countless pleas, the Delhi High Court has asked the legal teams of the parties involved to explore mediation. Nonetheless, not even 48 hours later, the buzz is that Sunjay's widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur, has filed a defamation suit against the industrialist's sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith.
Late businessman, Sunjay Kapur's inheritance dispute is nowhere near being over. Amid that, the industrialist's widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur, has now filed a new suit. According to reports circulating online, Priya has filed a defamation suit for Rs. 20 crore against her late husband's sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith. Priya, who is already in the middle of a long legal battle with Sunjay's second wife, Karisma Kapoor, has claimed that Mandhira's statements in a podcast have caused her social humiliation. The civil suit also lists the podcaster as a defendant.
On Thursday, February 12, 2026, Priya Sachdev Kapur filed a civil defamation suit before the Delhi High Court seeking Rs. 20 crore in damages against Mandhira Kapur Smith and podcast host, Pooja Chaudhri. In the suit, Priya has claimed that the statement made by Mandhira in Pooja's podcast has seriously harmed her reputation and caused emotional distress. The news of the same has now left the internet abuzz as Priya seeks a decree for damages amounting to Rs. 20 crore for the alleged loss of reputation, mental agony and social humiliation.
However, that is not all. Priya Kapur has also urged the court to grant injunctions restraining Mandhira Kapur Smith and the podcast host, Pooja Chaudhri, from publishing or circulating any further allegedly defamatory content against her. The late businessman, Sunjay Kapur's widow, has also directed them to remove the existing material from digital and social media platforms.
Things have been tense between the Kapur family ever since Sunjay Kapur's death in June 2025 in London. The sudden loss left the family heartbroken. However, it was two months later, in August 2025, when Sunjay's ex-wife, Karisma Kapoor, filed a lawsuit against Priya on behalf of her children, Samaira and Kiaan, alleging that Priya had fabricated Sunjay's will and kept their two children out of the inheritance. Mandhira Kapur Smith's podcast episode on Pooja Chaudhri's podcast was released soon after the lawsuit.
During her appearance on the podcast, InControversial with Pooja Chaudhri, Mandira Kapur Smith allegedly made derogatory comments about Priya Sachdev Kapur. The suit states that such content appeared in interviews, podcasts and on social media and was later widely shared and republished across online platforms. In addition to the civil action, Priya Sachdev has also recently filed a criminal defamation complaint against Sunjay Kapur's sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith, and another individual.
On February 10, 2026, the High Court urged the parties' legal teams to explore mediation. For the unversed, Priya Kapur has been sued by Sunjay and Karisma Kapoor's kids, Kiaan Raj, and Samara, who allege that the will submitted by Priya is not authentic. The kids have claimed that it is a forged copy, designed to keep them out of their inheritance. Sunjay's mother, Rani Kapur, is also a plaintiff in the separate legal battle.
