Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleDiana, the Princess of Wales, was one of the most-loved personalities of her time. Whether through her humanitarian work or her fashion outings, people went crazy to catch a glimpse of the royal lady. Apart from her social work, Diana’s personal life has always been the center of attention. Now, her brother, Charles Spencer, has shared some intimate details about her health.
In his forthcoming book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, revealed that the Princess may have suffered from a form of neurodivergence. In a recent interview with People, Spencer said he suffered from ADHD and felt that his sister too had the same symptoms. Not just this, Spencer also had his doubts about Diana being dyslexic, as he revealed:
“I think Diana suffered from dyslexia. She found spelling and word orders and letter orders quite tricky.”
ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is described as a neurodevelopmental disorder that can cause difficulties with paying attention. In the same interview, Spencer stated that because of the ADHD, Diana could get easily emotional and hurt. Going further in the interview, Spencer debunked people’s perception that the princess suffered mental health issues.
He also pointed out how people were judgemental about the princess, calling her ‘paranoid’. Rejecting people’s perception about her having bipolar or borderline personality, Spencer said:
“So people said, 'Oh, she was paranoid.' No, she wasn't. She was sensitive to rejection, and she felt very let down by people. And because of her ADHD, because of her personality and her character, she felt these things very deeply. And I think particularly so because she was giving so much of herself in her public life."
In his book, Spencer revealed that Diana was "struggling with a condition that was totally undiagnosed, and she could turn on a pin." He pointed out how she often had fallouts with her own family members. Spencer went on to say that for Diana, it was difficult to stay normal after being betrayed or led down by a friend. He also revealed that Diana didn't have a single family member she didn’t fall out with and turn her back on.
Do you know that Princess Diana even suffered from an eating disorder? Yes, Diana was one of the first major public figures to openly discuss an eating disorder during a time when mental health issues were considered a stigma. She publicly spoke about her struggle with bulimia nervosa for many years. She described it as a "secret disease" and a "survival mechanism" to cope with the immense pressures of royal life.
The illness began the week after her engagement to Prince Charles, as her insecurity triggered it. The princess recorded on confessional tapes that her insecurity with her own body made her so conscious that her waist shrank dramatically from 29 inches to 23 inches. It was Diana’s candid confession about her eating disorder after which many people came forward to reveal their diagnosis. In his memoir Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, Earl Spencer stated that Diana’s eating disorder worsened as a result of her loveless marriage with Prince Charles, as Spencer wrote:
“I had no idea that her food issues partly stemmed from a feeling that she was unloved by the man she adored.”
