Phil found himself at the centre of a developing legal case, following bombshell allegations levied against him by a woman.
In early June 2026, the golfer, who is married with children, was accused of inappropriate behaviour towards an unidentified woman. At the end of the same month, the accusations doubled down, with Pat Perez's ex-wife, Ashley Perez, alleging misconduct by Phil.
The controversy involving Phil Mickelson and Pat Perez's then-wife, Ashley Perez was a secret of the golf community for years, until she herself came forward with the allegations. The incident was publicised after an article written by golf reporter Alan Shipnuck was published on June 26, 2026, on the website Skratch. The alleged encounter between Phil and Ashley occurred in 2015, during the week of The Barclays tournament at the Plainfield Country Club in Edison, New Jersey. At that time, Phil made sure that he and his friend, Pat Perez, were staying in a luxurious villa.
Pat's then-wife, Ashley Perez, was also there, and they had a fun time drinking with Phil Mickelson. However, things soon took a different turn when Phil made unwanted advances towards her. The three of them were drinking wine on a patio when, at one point, Pat Perez excused himself to use the restroom. According to Ashley, Phil took advantage of the moment to show her an explicit bare body photo of himself, taken while he was aroused. He allegedly flexed about the image and made Ashley very uncomfortable.
The issue further escalated in an unacceptable direction as Phil allegedly followed up his photo flex with a lewd offer. As per Ashley, Phil made suggestive statements, telling her that he would wait for her in his room that night. An intoxicated Phil wanted her to come to him when her husband falls asleep and said that he would keep his door open for her. Later, when Ashley shared the incident with her then-husband, he was furious and never forgave Phil, even after the latter apologised. In Ashley's words, the accusations were:
"Phil says to me, 'I'm going to leave my bedroom door open tonight. When Pat falls asleep, I want you to come see me.'"
Amid the buzz around Phil Mickelson's alleged misconduct towards an unnamed woman and Pat Perez's ex-wife, the former hired a defamation lawyer, Tom Clare. He appeared for an interview with the same website which published Ashley Perez's allegations against him. The six-time major winner's legal representative told them that not all allegations against him were true. He even questioned the intent behind all the accusers coming up with past incidents one after another, and claimed it led to a "false and misleading narrative" regarding Phil. His exact words were:
"Some of the allegations circulating about Mr. Mickelson are false, and others revisit mistakes he has already acknowledged, publicly or privately. Stacking the disputed claims next to the ones he has owned does not make them credible. It instead contributes to a false and misleading narrative."
Phil Mickelson's lawyer also hit back at the article mentioning his attitude towards his wife, Amy Mickelson changed after he found out about her breast cancer diagnosis. The legal counsel claimed that, in reality, the opposite was true and that his client was focused on being a family man. He emphasised that Phil stepped away from the PGA Tour in May 2009 to care for Amy and has slowed down his career ever since.
