Still, Peter's close ones revealed that he died peacefully, surrounded by his family. Noticeably, the voice actor had also reduced his public appearances since 2024 citing heath reasons. They shared a heartfelt statement to express their gratitude to everyone who supported him over the decades. In their words:
"He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide."
The brief statement shared by Peter's family also highlighted a specific phrase that became synonymous with his personality over time. It reads, "Be strong enough to be gentle." Many people felt the voice actor's voice accurately portrayed 'Optimus Prime' as a representation of leadership, courage, and integrity. At the same time, Peter's voice added more depth in both the original animated series and blockbuster live-action films.
Another important aspect of Peter's career was the inspiration behind his famous role. He often mentioned that he took his inspiration from his older brother, Larry Cullen, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. Initially, before he gave the audition in the 1980s, Larry suggested to Peter to avoid being loud or aggressive. Instead, he advised his brother to create a character who was calm, compassionate, and strong, yet gentle.
