Netflix's recently released film, People We Meet on Vacation, starring Emily Bader and Tom Blyth, has been generating a lot of buzz on social media. The romantic movie, which was released on January 9, 2026, is based on Emily Henry’s much-loved novel of the same name. Plotline of People We Meet On Vacation

The film, People We Meet on Vacation, is a romantic story about two people whose friendship blossoms into love. The film follows 'Poppy' and 'Alex', who first meet in college. 'Poppy' is outgoing, energetic and always up for an adventure. On the other hand, 'Alex' is quiet and thoughtful, who prefers a calm life. After college, both 'Poppy' and 'Alex' choose different career paths, but promise each other to meet once every year for a summer vacation.

Each summer, 'Poppy' and 'Alex' travel to different places. This is the best part of their friendship. During these annual trips, the two laugh, argue and grow close. Unknowingly, they create some of the best memories of their life. However, gradually the two fall in love with each other, but neither of them accepts it. Later, everything changes when 'Poppo' and 'Alex' go to Italy for their trip, but this time 'Poppy' is with her boyfriend, 'Trey' and 'Alex' is with 'Sarah', his girlfriend.

Things turn tense at the trip when 'Poppy' thinks that she is pregnant. Later, 'Alex' supports her during this. During the same, 'Poppy' almost kisses 'Alex'; however, he pulls back. Later, 'Alex' announces his engagement with 'Sarah', which angers 'Poppy'. This leads to a heated argument between 'Poppy' and 'Alex' and they decide to stop meeting on trips. Eventually, the two don't talk to each other for two years.

Ending explained of People We Meet On Vacation

Two years later, 'Poppy' and 'Alex' reunite at 'Alex's' brother's wedding in Spain. The union brings back multiple memories and feelings. During the same, they argue about the past and finally speak honestly about what went wrong. 'Poppy' admits missing 'Alex'. The same night, they confess their feelings and share a passionate kiss.

However, the next day, 'Alex' worries about his life with her and leaves her. Later, 'Poppy' realises the truth of her life and decides to stop running away from her feelings. Towards the end of the film, 'Poppy' goes back to Linfield and runs after 'Alex'. She chases him down the street and confesses her true feelings. She also admits that she is ready to build a future together. 'Alex' finally believes her and stays with her. The film ends with 'Poppy' and 'Alex' living together in New York. They resume their summer trip tradition, but now as a couple.

Difference between movie and book ending

While in both the versions, 'Poppy' and 'Alex' end up living together in New York, there are a few differences. In the movie, 'Poppy' is shown chasing 'Alex' down the streets, whereas in the book, 'Poppy' heads back to the place she hated the most- her old high school, where 'Alex' is a teacher. There, she finds out that 'Alex' is in a local bar. At the bar, she delivers a long, heartfelt speech explaining her fears, mistakes, and how deeply she loves him. While the book focuses on a slow yet reflective ending, the movie has a more dramatic and visual end.
