Olivia Rodrigo has landed in serious trouble this time. She came under public scrutiny after her Drop Dead music video was released on April 17, 2026. People criticised her for donning the babydoll outfit. Earlier, this month, in May 2026, a claim on X (formerly Twitter) about Olivia’s outfit and Epstein Files’ secret link had gone viral. In fact, people also drew comparisons between the babydoll aesthetics and the Lolita theme. Amid this, Olivia broke her silence over the following.

Olivia Rodrigo addresses the babydoll outfit controversy

Recently, Olivia Rodrigo sat for a candid conversation with Popcast. During the conversation, Olivia addressed the babydoll outfit controversy. She admitted that the controversy made her upset. She then clarified that she is not losing sleep over the harsh comments about her fashion choice, but rather due to the absurd logic behind the accusation. Olivia mentioned that earlier, when she wore a more revealing dress, no one said anything, but suddenly, people started calling it inappropriate when she donned a fully covered dress. She was quoted as saying:

"What’s really disturbing is I have worn outfits that are maybe revealing on stage, a sparkly bra and little shorts, without this level of pearl clutching. That wasn’t inappropriate. But me fully covered up in a dress that people deemed to be childlike was inappropriate."

During the same conversation, Olivia claimed that labelling a modest, high-neckline dress as inappropriate while ignoring more revealing outfits proves a sick double standard mentality. She highlighted that often in society, a woman is told not to wear this as it might sexualise your body, and if it happens, it’s their fault only. She insisted that women should not be held responsible if men sexualise their bodies. Olivia then explained that she didn’t feel sexy in the babydoll outfit but rather felt cool in it and adored her punk rock heroes, Kathleen Hanna and Courtney Love. She was quoted as saying:

"I just think it really shows how we really normalize pedophilia in our culture. Women are told, 'Don't wear that because then a man is going to sexualise your body and it's your fault.' I was like, 'This is so cool. I feel like I look like Kathleen Hanna or Courtney Love.'"

Netizens' reaction to Olivia Rodrigo's explanation on the babydoll outfit controversy

While Olivia tried her best to address the babydoll dress controversy, a section of social media users is not yet convinced. Netizens think that it is not just about the outfit but the way Olivia portrayed herself in the Drop Dead music video. A user wrote, "Girl, you were literally crawling on the floor and lifting your dress showing your panties." Taking a dig at Olivia’s remark on men sexualising a woman’s body, a user commented, "A man wasn’t sexualising your body, you were sexualising yourself in a babydoll."

Another user wrote, "Adults wearing child-associated clothing and sexualizing the look is exactly how pedophilia gets normalised in our culture." A fourth user penned, "Olivia’s response neatly shifts the blame onto observers when the real accountability lies with the person choosing to wear it." A fifth user wrote, "It normalizes pedophilia when people DON'T object to her dressing like a little girl. Why doesn't she just take the note and move on? Stop defending this." Another comment can be read as:

"Girl, someone forced you to stage the song like that, or did you do it? Weird way to try to shift the blame. You did a thing. You didn't anticipate how it'd be perceived for some reason.... These are the consequences of something you did."
