Toaster is the tale of a penny-pincher

To what extent of stinginess can a person go to save money? Well, when it comes to 'Ramakant', the answer is very simple: whatever it takes. The man spends most of his day calculating how he could save money and will go to any bizarre lengths to do so. The film begins with a very strange ritual of 'Ramakant' where he visits his landlady every day for a free "kurkura" toast with butter and marmalade for breakfast.

He uses his ability to sweet-talk to get the lady to reduce his rent almost every month, and cherishes every saved penny as a victory. However, things get interesting when viewers find out that he will go to any lengths to save money, even at the expense of his self-esteem. He literally thrives on saving every penny, and Rajkummar Rao has done an impeccable job at portraying the stingy man, making it not just entertaining but compelling too.

The meaning behind Toaster

While entertaining to watch, the film's title, Toaster has created some questions. Well, it all begins with a young couple living in a gated colony in Borivali, populated only by senior citizens. 'Ramakant's' (Rajkummar Rao) wife, 'Shilpa' (Sanya Malhotra), finds it very difficult to spend time and is portrayed as a bored housewife seeking some adventure in life. Hilariously, she even blames the old people of the colony for the few new strands of grey hair on her head. However, that's just the "tragedy of domesticity" that his wife finds it difficult to cope with. With a nonexistent social life, she spends her whole day watching crime thrillers.

The wedding gift that changed everything

The real twist, however, comes when 'Ramakant's' wife, 'Shilpa' is invited to the wedding of her guruji's daughter. She plans to gift the bride a brand new toaster, leading to hilarious twists, as the toaster that 'Ramakant' and his wife gifted at the wedding ends up going to waste. Nonetheless, 'Ramakant' being the penny-pincher he is sets out to get the toaster back while dragging himself and others into a series of messy situations, where every attempt to set things right only makes matters worse.

Toaster's quirky cast that elevates the chaos

We can rightfully thank Vivek Das Chaudhary for the clever story and direction. However, it wouldn't have been complete without the impeccable lineup. This quirky film has an ensemble cast including Archana Puran Singh, Abhishek Banerjee, Farah Khan, Upendra Limaye, Vinod Rawat, Jitendra Joshi, and Seema Pahwa. Each and every character in the film brings their own quirkiness, which adds to the story's confusion.

The unexpected twist and final verdict

It is only towards the end that he realises that he and the toaster are the cause of all the mess in his life. However, the real surprise of the film is Archana Puran Singh's character, 'Mrs Malini Pherwani'. It shows how some people have dual characters: one for society and one for themselves, and how an old woman can be a sex addict too and can have hots for younger men. While it can feel a bit of an overstretch towards the end, the film is definitely a must-watch if you're looking for a good laugh.
