On October 6, 2026, Christa's lawyer revealed that she is conscious and speaking nearly a week after her botched execution. For the unversed, Christa was one of three people who were involved in the 1995 torture and killing of Slemmer.
May Martinez, the mother of Christa Pike's victim, shared that she had a feeling Christa would survive. She also stated that she doesn't think that Tennessee would make another attempt to execute her daughter's killer. For the unversed, Christa Pike didn't commit the murder alone; her boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, was also involved in it.
He was found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. He received life in prison rather than the death penalty, as he was 17 at the time. There was another girl named Shadolla Peterson who was involved in the crime and was convicted of being an accessory. She received parole after she became an informant to police. May Martinez was asked what she thinks would happen to Christa Pike. She replied:
"It doesn’t matter what I think. They’re going to do what they’re going to do."
For the unversed, Christa was supposed to be executed via lethal injection in Tennessee last week. However, after a failed first dose, another dose of the injection was administered, but she survived it. Afterward, she was rushed to the hospital, and necessary treatment was given to help her survive.
Christa's lawyer released a statement that the State of Tennessee failed to carry out a lawful execution. The lawyer said:
"Tonight the State of Tennessee once again failed to carry out a lawful execution. We take no pleasure in being right, but the concerns raised by Ms. Pike proved to be true: difficult vein access, blown veins, degraded pentobarbital, no emergency medical care available when things inevitably go wrong, all under a protocol that remains veiled in secrecy."
Recently, Christa's lawyer claimed that despite the severe damage she endured to her arms due to the failed execution, she is still handcuffed and shackled to the bed. He mentioned that Christa's recovery is medically unprecedented and it might take a long time for her to get back. The lawyer said:
"Her recovery is medically unprecedented. Her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery. We are incredibly grateful to the first responders and the medical team at the hospital who treated Christa like a human and have provided exceptional care to her. We also want to thank thousands from all over the world who sent messages offering prayers and support for Christa."
Coming back to the horrendous murder, the most shocking part, which left people in deep fear across the United States, was that there was a pentagram carved into Colleen's chest after her passing.
Christa's lawyer stated that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder after the killing of Colleen. In an earlier petition, Christa revealed that it took her years to even understand what she had done. It was hard for her to accept how many lives were affected by her act. She was apologetic about taking the life of someone's child, sister, and friend.
Christa has been the first woman who was given the order to be executed in the state after more than 200 years. The Death Penalty Information Center stated that the last execution of a woman happened in 1820. For the unversed, Christa received two doses of the drug in a failed attempt to execute her on September 31, 2026.
