'Mortal Kombat II' Release Date, Get Ready For The Blockbuster Movie Debut Of 'Johnny Cage'

Mortal Kombat II has finally locked a release date. A sequel to the 2021 film, Mortal Kombat, the movie is scheduled to arrive in theatres on May 8, 2026. A majority of the cast members are returning, along with some new faces, introducing new characters. The previous movie was based on a video game franchise of the same name. Moreover, it was a reboot of the film series, which originally started with some animated films in 1995, followed by two live-action films in 1995 and 1997.

The 2021 Mortal Kombat unexpectedly became a hit at the box office despite the fact that critics were not so impressed with the screenplay and a few other things. Viewers gave a positive response to the action sequences. A sequel entered development immediately after the arrival of the first movie. It received a go-ahead from New Line Cinema in 2022, and the casting process started in May 2023. Filming began in the same year and ended by the beginning of 2024. Release date of Mortal Kombat II was finalised in October 2025

Just like every other film, Mortal Kombat II went through some shifts in its official release date. The producers originally planned to bring the film to theatres on October 24, 2025. However, the movie was eventually shifted to the summer of 2026, locking the release date of May 15, 2026. In October 2025, the release was once again moved to May 8, 2026.

According to Deadline, the shifting of the release date from October 2025 to May 2026 was because the makers reportedly wanted to avoid any competition from two movies, Springsteen Deliver Me From Nowhere and Regretting You. Simon McQuoid is returning to direct Mortal Kombat II, and Warner Bros. Pictures will also be involved with the film, along with New Line Cinema, Atomic Monster, Broken Road Productions, and Fireside Films.

The first movie released in 2021 mentioned the 'Mortal Kombat' tournament. Notably, viewers will get to know all about the tournament in Mortal Kombat II, where warriors will confront each other in a bloody battle, with any one of them emerging as the winner. Co-creator of the Mortal Kombat game, Ed Boon, once told Entertainment Weekly in an interview that there will be a visual representation of the tournament’s winner, and it won’t be like any other tournament since this one has its own consequences and twists.

Gamesradar stated that the tournament will feature Earthrealm champions facing everyone from the Outworld. The warriors on Earth need to ensure that they win to prevent 'Shao Khan' from conquering mankind. ‘Johnny Cage’ will be an important part of the storyline along with ‘Sub-Zero’ and ‘Scorpion.’ The latest trailer of Mortal Kombat II, which arrived on February 25, 2026, revealed that ‘Johnny Cage’ will get a chance to shine in the tournament.

New characters are being introduced in Mortal Kombat II

Considering that Mortal Kombat II is a sequel, a few characters are going to return from the first film. This includes 'Sonya Blade,' played by Jessica McNamee. There is also Josh Lawson, appearing as 'Kano,' followed by Mehcad Brooks as 'Jax,' and Lewis Tan as 'Cole Young.' Damon Herriman is also returning this time. However, he will play the role of 'Quan Chi.' The previous movie featured Damon giving his voice to the character, 'Kabal.'

Among the new additions is Karl Urban, who will appear as 'Johnny Cage.' Adeline Rudolph will portray 'Kitana,' with Sophia Xu appearing as a young version of the character. Other cast members include Tati Gabrielle, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Hiroyuki Sanada, Martyn Ford, Desmond Chiam, Ana Thu Nguyen, Max Huang, CJ Bloomfield, and Joe Taslim.
