Apple TV's 'Monarch: Legacy of Monsters' Season 2 is back with a high-action premiere that concludes on a note that left everyone shocked.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters opened with immediate chaos as it returned for Season 2. Capitalising on the MosterVerse's recent big-screen momentum from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, it is said to be a twisted tale of dramatic explosions. However, this time it's 'Kong' who will take the centre stage from the very first second. The big change signals a larger scope and higher stakes for the upcoming Apple TV+ series.
The premiere episode, released on February 27, 2026 (ET), is titled Cause and Effect and picks up directly after the Season 1 finale, wasting no time throwing its characters back into danger. So, without any further ado, let's take a look at what the premiere has hinted at for the rest of the season. Warning: Spoilers ahead!
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 Episode 1 resumes on Skull Island, where 'Cate', 'Kentaro', 'Hiroshi', and 'Keiko' have just reunited. However, their brief relief is shattered by 'Kong's' sudden rampage. Angered by 'Monarch' and 'Apex Cybernetics' interference, 'Kong' storms through the jungle. Which evidently leads to mass destruction with 'Kong' crushing helicopters and whatever else falls in his path. His anger echoes the ferocity he showed in Kong: Skull Island. While the group hardly escapes by helicopter, there is a tense moment when 'Kong' locks eyes with them mid-flight. A horrifyingly real reminder that 'Kong' is not just a protector but also unpredictable and immensely powerful.
'Keiko' awakens aboard a 'Monarch' ship, confused and overwhelmed. We see 'Hiroshi' and others finally explain to 'Keiko' how 'Monarch' has evolved after her disappearance. While scientists urge her to rest, she is more concerned with understanding what her life's work has become. On the other hand, 'Cate' is left guilt-ridden for leaving 'Lee Shaw' behind in Axis Mundi. However, she is determined to rescue him and convinces 'Kentaro' and 'May' to return to Skull Island, despite orders stating the contrary by 'Deputy Director Natalia Verdugo'. 'Hiroshi' reluctantly joins them. 'May' creates a distraction so they can sneak back after having turned down a job with 'Apex'.
The show continues its dual-timeline storytelling, with time jumping back to 1957 when 'Keiko', 'Bill Randa' and 'Lee Shaw' travel to a remote seaside village in Southern Chile, where the locals worship a mysterious sea creature as a god and warn the trio not to disturb it. With help from a sympathetic barmaid, they explore a cave linked to the creature. This flashback reveals that 'Monarch's' history with 'Titan X' dates back decades and that the threat has been looming longer than we anticipated.
Back on Skull Island, 'Cate' attempts to reopen the portal to Axis Mundi. The island is crawling with dangerous creatures, including one that Kentaro kills with a forklift in a frantic survival moment. However, on the 'Monarch' ship, 'Keiko' reviews the footage of 'Kong's' rampage and notices something that later becomes crucial evidence of the same sea creature investigated in 1957. As the storm unravels, 'Monarch' sends a team to retrieve 'Cate's' team, while she successfully reactivates the portal. The pod re-enters Axis Mundi, where the older 'Lee Shaw' is still alive and fighting for survival.
'Lee' reached the pod just as a swarm of small creatures was about to attack him. Behind them, the true threat appears: 'Titan X', a massive sea monster awakened by the portal's energy beam. While 'Lee' slips through the portal, so does the monster, leading the chaos to escalate rather quickly. 'Titan X' lashes out with enormous tentacles, striking down 'Deputy Director Natalia Verdugo', who is seemingly killed in the attack, forcing 'Monarch's team to retreat in shock as the creature drags itself into the ocean. While 'Kong' arrives too late, he roars at the sky in frustration, then roars again, locking an accusatory stare on 'Cate's' helicopter.
'Natalia Verdugo's' demise marks the episode's most significant casualty. Although she wasn't the central protagonist, her loss raised the stakes and highlighted the dangers that 'Monarch' faces. It also weighs heavily on 'Cate', who initiated the portal that allowed Titan X to escape. The show also leans into the subtle shift towards 'Keiko' and 'Tim' working together to reshape 'Monarch's' future, potentially restoring 'Keiko's' original vision for the organisation.
'Titan X' is now loose in the world, a threat dating back to the 1950s and powerful enough to challenge both 'Kong' and, potentially, 'Godzilla'. With the MonsterVerse timeline approaching the events of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, questions arise about how 'Titan X' fits into the larger mythology.
