An elementary school in Oregon was attacked on Thursday, October 15, 2026. It was later revealed that a 16-year-old had stormed into the school and opened fire, which led to four deaths. Amid the horror of the incident, reports have surfaced that a mom turned coach for her son during the shooting, after having been through a school shooting herself back in 2001.

Mom who survived a school shooting in 2001 coaches her son through the Oregon attack

A mom who survived a school shooting over two decades ago found herself living her worst nightmare after her son's school was opened fire on. However, through the tragedy, she managed to coach her son through the same trauma when a deranged gunman stormed into an Oregon elementary school. Michelle sent a string of chilling texts to her little boy, assuring him that he and his brother would survive the bloodshed.

The texts later shared with the media outlets showed her repeatedly reminding her son, "I love you so much." During a conversation with CNN, Michelle said she could not believe that it was happening all over again. She expressed her concern about her children getting through this trauma and said:

"I was just in shock. I was like, how can this happen? How can lightning strike twice? How can I go through this and then my children go through this?"

Michelle revealed that her fifth-grader called her from his Apple Watch at 1 p.m., just one minute after authorities were called after teen gunman Griffin J. John II fired his first shot outside Silver Rail Elementary School. She recalled receiving the terrifying text that said, "Mom, there's a shooter." He confirmed in a text moments later, first scrambling to write "shroterr" before following up with, "shooter at school."

What followed was a string of texts from Michelle asking her son not to call anyone and to be as quiet as possible. She asked them to text only if it was safe, but not call at any cost. She further tried comforting her son, telling him that the cops would soon find him. She wrote:

"Baby, I love you. Don't call anyone. Please be as quiet as possible....If you can safely text me, that's OK; just don't make any calls...The police are going to help you...I love you so much...Do you know anything that's going on?"

She followed back with her son almost an hour later, asking him questions and telling him she loved him. Michelle repeatedly told her son that he was going to be okay. She then shared about her own incident and told him, "This happened to me too, and I am okay," she wrote to the boy, which, according to CNN, was the first time she ever revealed to her kids the trauma she went through.

Michelle's comforting texts kept her son as calm as possible even in the hour of extreme danger. She told him that the authorities would get them out of the school and said, "I love you so much. It's going to be okay...They will load you on the bus, and it will be kind of slow, but we will get to you, I promise."

Michelle recalled her own school shooting tragedy

After the incident, Michelle told the media outlet that she was a freshman at Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, California, when senior Jason Anthony Hoffman opened fire in a March 2001 attack. Michelle recalled how he had wounded three students and two teachers, but fortunately there were no casualties. Michelle said she has continued to live with the trauma of the shooting.

Talking to the media outlet, she revealed that, even though it has been decades, she suffers from panic attacks and always finds herself looking for the nearest exit in public spaces. She reflected on how she has a constant nagging feeling every time she drops her kids at the school and said:

"Every single time I dropped them off, and I would see them walk in the front doors, I would get a pit in my stomach thinking, 'I hope I see him again.' It's probably because of the trauma I went through."

Talking about the incident at Silver Rail Elementary School, four people lost their lives in the attack. The victims included three students: 5-year-old Rhoam Summer, an 8-year-old, and an 11-year-old, and teacher Megan Lambert, 25. A hero teacher managed to wrestle John to the floor until a student's brave father, Kaylub Giamanco, stormed into the classroom and fatally shot the gunman. According to sources, John's weapon had been legally purchased by his mother around the time of his August 2026 birthday.
