Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleThe world of college football is in mourning the shocking and untimely death of MicahJo Barnett. The 20-year-old William Jewell College running back had just scored a touchdown to give his team an early lead in their season opener against Fort Lewis College when he collapsed on the sidelines.
The unfortunate event happened on Saturday, August 29, 2026, in Liberty, Missouri. The young athlete was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later declared dead.
MicahJo Barnett was playing for the William Jewell Cardinals in their season-opening game against Fort Lewis College when he experienced a medical emergency during the first quarter. According to reports, Liberty Fire/EMS paramedics were already on standby at the game, as is standard for William Jewell home games. They were called to the sidelines at approximately 12:20 p.m. local time, around 20 minutes after kickoff.
Barnett had made an immediate impact in the game. Live statistics showed that he scored a touchdown with 5:15 remaining in the first quarter, giving the Cardinals a 7-0 lead. However, tragedy struck shortly afterward. Emergency responders treated Barnett on the sidelines for several minutes before taking him by ambulance to an area hospital. William Jewell College later confirmed that the 20-year-old had died. The game was suspended following the medical emergency and was later canceled.
MicahJo Barnett's official cause of death has not yet been publicly announced. William Jewell College confirmed that the young running back suffered a medical emergency during the game but did not immediately release further information about its cause. Reports describing what happened on the sidelines have circulated, but authorities and the college have not publicly confirmed an official medical cause of death.
Barnett was a junior at William Jewell College, where he was studying business administration while playing football for the Cardinals. Born in Shawnee Mission, Kansas, he was the son of Michelle Barnett and Felix Lora, and one of seven siblings. He had deep ties to the community of Liberty, Missouri, since an early age.
Before joining William Jewell, Barnett attended Liberty North High School, where he became one of the area's standout football players, especially as a running back. As a junior, Barnett suffered a torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and missed an important game against rival Christian Brothers College. But he returned stronger during his senior season, eventually helping Liberty North win its first-ever state football championship.
During his senior year, he finished with a remarkable score of 20 touchdowns and a record 1,450 all-purpose yards. In the state semifinal, Barnett scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime against Rockhurst, following which he delivered yet another memorable performance in the Class 6 state championship game, rushing for 120 yards and two touchdowns as Liberty North defeated CBC 38-7.
Barnett's football journey was not without setbacks. Despite his potential, his height became an issue. Standing at 5-foot-8, he was considered undersized for his position, but he continued to prove himself on the field. The defining moment came when he returned stronger after suffering an ACL tear in high school.
During his college career, Barnett appeared in 8 games as a freshman and continued to develop into an important player for the Cardinals. Last season, he reportedly led the team in rushing with 366 yards and four touchdowns before another injury cut his season short.
Perhaps the most heartbreaking detail surrounding Barnett's death is that he had scored a touchdown shortly before suffering the medical emergency. In Saturday's game, Barnett's score gave William Jewell an early 7-0 advantage in what was supposed to mark the beginning of a new season. Instead, the game came to an abrupt and devastating end.
William Jewell College is heartbroken by the loss, and his teammates and coaches are deeply affected by the tragedy. In a statement following Barnett's passing, the college released a statement, saying:
"William Jewell College and the Liberty, Missouri community mourn the passing of Micah Jo Barnett, a junior business administration student and member of Jewell Cardinal football program and former Liberty North Eagle. Our thoughts and prayers are with Micah Jo's family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss."
Rest in peace, MicahJo!
