Dwight Howard is grabbing the headlines after his wife, Amy Luciani, alleged that CPS removed her daughter because of his drug problems. Amid this, learn all about David's 5 kids.
Dwight Howard is a renowned American former professional basketball player. While attending Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy, he played power forward and was widely recognised as the best high school basketball player at the time. After choosing to forego college and entering the 2004 NBA draft, Dwight began his professional career after being selected first overall by the Orlando Magic. After almost a decade, the 2011-2012 season was his final season with the Magic before he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Later, Dwight signed a four-year, USD 88 million contract with the Houston Rockets. After his time with the Houston Rockets, Dwight played for several other teams, including the Atlanta Hawks, the Charlotte Hornets, the Washington Wizards, the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Taoyuan Leopards. Coming to his personal life, Dwight Howard is in the spotlight after his wife, Amy Luciani, alleged that child protective services (CPS) removed her daughter owing to the NBA player's drug problems. She also said that he was using his kids to lie and create alibis against her. If you are curious to learn more about Dwight Howard's children, keep on reading.
Dwight Howard welcomed his first child, a son named Braylon, on November 18, 2007, with his former partner, Royce Reed. For those unaware, Royce was a cheerleader for the Orlando Magic when Dwight was still playing for the team. According to reports, Braylon currently lives with his mother. However, he still maintains a close relationship with his father. This is evidenced by the fact that Dwight wrote the sweetest tribute for his son on the occasion of his 16th birthday in November 2023. The caption of the carousel of throwback photos that Dwight posted can be read as:
"Wow, it’s been 16 years since you came into this world. You have grown soo much, and I’m grateful that I've been able to witness it all. You are my firstborn, and it fills my heart with joy to see your wonderful smile and the cheerful spirit you carry with you. Whether through the good, the bad, or the indifferent, I love you immensely."
Dwight Howard further added that even after he is long “gone”, he would continue to be there for Braylon. It is worth noting that Braylon has followed in his father's footsteps as an athlete, although instead of basketball, he reportedly plays for his school's football team.
Dwight became a father for the second time in 2010, welcoming his daughter, Layla, with his then-girlfriend, Tiffany Render. Compared to her siblings, Layla remains mostly outside the spotlight. Although she does make rare appearances on her dad's Instagram from time to time. For instance, in August 2022, Dwight posted some sweet moments from a hiking trip with Lalya and her sister, Jayde.
The caption for the post was equally sweet: “Make the most of our every moment. And that memory will last a lifetime.” Layla was seen once again in a June 2023 TikTok video. In the video, she and Dwight watch the NBA finals, all while joking about how they make the “best father-daughter duo”. In the same video, they can also be seen having a jolly time dancing together.
Interestingly, in the same year that Dwight Howard welcomed Layla, he had another daughter with a fitness model named Hope Alexa. Born on December 29, 2010, Dwight lovingly named his second daughter, Jayde. Similar to her sister, Layla, Jayde also keeps out of the spotlight.
According to reports, a few years back, in the summer of 2024, Jayde went travelling with her father and brother, Dwight III, across the world. Two of the places they reportedly visited together were Tokyo and the Philippines. In the year prior, Dwight posted a series of throwback pictures of himself and his daughter on the occasion of her 13th birthday. The majority of the photos featured Jayde supporting her dad while he was still on the Los Angeles Lakers team. He captioned the photos, “Happy Birthday Jayde. The last birthday of December #12/29.”
Three years after Dwight had his daughters, he welcomed his son, Dwight lll “Trey” Howard, with Christine Vest. If reports are to be believed, Trey was born in June 2013. In his years growing up, Trey became one of Dwight Howard's biggest supporters.
Not only was he often spotted at Dwight's games cheering his father from the sidelines, but he also inspired the former NBA player to join the reality show, Dancing With The Stars (DWTS). This was revealed at the premiere of the show when host, Julianne Hough questioned Dwight about the reason he joined the show. Giving a shoutout to Trey, who was in the audience, Dwight replied:
"Really, for my son, he's here in the audience, Trey Howard. I always tell him that you can do all things through Christ...You can do anything you put your mind to, man."
In the same year that Dwight had Trey, he welcomed his youngest child, a son named David Howard, with his then-girlfriend, Melissa Rios. Sadly, in 2020, when David was merely 6 years old, Melissa passed away from an epileptic seizure. After her death was announced, Lakers beat reporter, Mike Trudell, claimed that Dwight's main focus at that moment was to be there for his son to the best of his ability and explain the loss of his mother.
Since his mother's passing, David has lived primarily with Dwight. He was even seen accompanying the NBA player to events like the premiere of Spider-Man: No Way Home in December 2021. From a July 2023 TikTok, it is also evident that Dwight trains his youngest son, pushing him to “never say you can't” as he exercises.
