After an ambitious start, Max Verstappen's hopes for securing a podium finish at the British Grand Prix have come to a frustrating end. It happened after a mechanical failure forced him to retire from the race at Silverstone. In fact, the Red Bull driver was running strong before an unexpected issue with his RB22 sent him spinning into the gravel. This has added to his difficult 2026 Formula One season.

Max Verstappen's British GP ends his wish for podium finish 

Max Verstappen's crash occurred during the final stages of the July 5, 2026 race. During that time, he was running in third place. Some videos shared by Formula 1 showed his car suddenly losing control before it spun off the track and into the gravel. Team radio suggested that RB22 had a rear-wing problem. In turn, it caused a sudden loss of downforce, leaving Max unable to control the car.

The Dutch driver made his frustration clear over the team radio and even shouted in anger after the incident. He looked unhappy after the race with the team's decisions throughout the weekend. At the same time, Max Verstappen revealed that he wanted changes made before the race but was unable to get his preferred setup. 

Meanwhile, Max's retirement allowed Ferrari's Charles Leclerc to claim victory, ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell and Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Max Verstappen's British GP loss is another expensive setback for RB22

The British Grand Prix disappointment comes just a day after Max struggled in qualifying. He had finished seventh and complained that his RB22 was lacking power. Overall, it was performing as expected. After qualifying, Max admitted that the team had tried many changes but failed to solve the issue. He also expressed concern that the issue would affect the British GP, and eventually his fears proved correct. 

Unfortunately for Max Verstappen, the new incident is added to the long list of setbacks this season. Previously, he retired from the Japanese Grand Prix after Red Bull reported issues with the steering system and front suspension.

On the other hand, at the Chinese Grand Prix, cooling issues forced him to retire. Later, engine issues ruined his race in Monaco. Now, another rear wing failure has added to the team's reliability issues. These repeated mechanical failures have seriously damaged Max's championship campaign.

Despite Max Verstappen's best attempts, he has been unable to consistently perform well at due to these technological issues. Instead, every retirement has increased his gap to his competitors. Overall, it has posed major title challenges for him. Meanwhile, it has increased the pressure on Red Bull to find and fix the RB22's weaknesses.

What happens next for Max Verstappen and Red Bull?

The attention has now turned to the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. The Hungarian Grand Prix will follow it before Formula One goes into summer break. Red Bull is expected to conduct a detailed investigation into the latest rear wing failure to determine what went wrong and prevent a similar incident.
