For those who don't know, Matthew Perry never married or had any kids before his death in 2023. He got massive career success with his role as 'Chandler Bing' on Friends. But behind the scenes, he was struggling with substance abuse for years. Now, his sister's comments give insight into his family's concerns for him while he succeeded professionally.
Matthew Perry opened up about his battle with addiction in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing. He explained that his struggles also affected his work on Friends. In fact, his appearance changed on-screen depending on the substance he was using. Matthew explained that his weight could hint at where he was in his addiction. Sharing his insight, the actor wrote:
"When I'm carrying weight, it's alcohol; when I'm skinny, it's pills."
The actor also recalled the difficulties around the filming of 'Chandler' and 'Monica's' wedding scene. In his memoir, Matthew wrote that he was taken to a treatment center shortly after the scene ended.
He also described that his dependence on prescription medicine came to a point during the filming of the show's third season where he was trying to get as many as 55 Vicodin pills a day. All this was to avoid becoming seriously ill. Still, he shared his story in the hope that it might help others.
In his personal life, he dated several high-profile personalities such as Julia Roberts in the 1990s and Mean Girls star Lizzy Caplan from 2006 to 2012. Later, in November 2020, he shared that he popped the question to literary manager Molly Hurwitz.
However, it ended within six months. Matthew wrote in his memoir that he was under the influence when he proposed and did not remember it clearly. Now, his sister is sharing his journey through a three-part Netflix documentary that will come out on October 27, 2026.
Matthew Perry took his last breath on October 28, 2023. He was 54. The actor was found unresponsive in the hot tub at his home in Pacific Palisades, California. Later, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed that his primary cause of death was the acute effect of ketamine. Some other contributing factors were drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine.
Therefore, police also launched an investigation into his death. They ended up bringing charges against five people who were accused of supplying ketamine or helping its distribution to the actor. The accused also included his longtime assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, and others were among those prosecuted. Meanwhile, Jasveen Sangha, known as the "Ketamine Queen," got a 15-year prison sentence.
