Everyone remembers Julia Roberts’ cameo in Friends. But not many people know that she had a real-life connection with Perry. Yes, the two dated briefly for some time. In his memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, Matthew revealed that Roberts had expressed interest in appearing on Friends, but with a condition. Matthew revealed that Roberts said that “she would only do the show if she could be in Chandler’s storyline.”
But do you know Matthew did a lot of wooing to impress Roberts, which compelled her to take the role? At the urging of Friends creator Marta Kauffman, Perry sent Roberts three dozen roses and a witty card. Soon the two started exchanging faxes. Penning about the same, he mentioned:
“Thus began a three-month-long courtship by daily faxes. This was pre-internet, pre-cell phones – all our exchanges were done by fax. And there were many; hundreds. Three or four times a day I would sit by my fax machine and watch the piece of paper slowly revealing her next missive.”
The fax exchanges turned into long phone calls before their actual meeting. Finally, Roberts showed up at Perry’s door. The two began dating and were a couple when Roberts appeared in the Friends episode, The One After the Super Bowl. When Roberts appeared on the show, she not only brought star power but also gifted Perry bagels.
Perry and Roberts had a very sweet but short romance. During their dating phase, he even visited Roberts’ family in Taos, New Mexico, for New Year’s 1996. However, within two months, he broke up with her. In his memoir, Perry admitted dating Roberts felt overwhelming to him. Sharing the reason behind it, he penned:
“Dating Julia Roberts had been too much for me. I had been constantly certain that she was going to break up with me. Why would she not? I was not enough; I could never be enough; I was broken, bent, unlovable. So instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts.”
On October 28, 2023, the world was left stunned when Matthew Perry was found dead in his Pacific Palisades home, floating face-down in his hot tub. At first, many believed that the actor died due to natural causes, given his long history of health issues. However, autopsy reports and further investigations soon uncovered that Perry’s life was cut short by a lethal dose of ketamine in his blood.
After Perry’s passing in October 2023, Roberts reflected on their past with sweet memories. She fondly remembered her time on Friends and the warmth she received. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Roberts spoke about Perry’s passing and said:
“The sudden passing of anybody so young is heartbreaking.”
