Manisha Koirala On Being Impacted By Cancer And Battling Depression While Shooting For 'Heeramandi'

Manisha Koirala revealed if being impacted by cancer took a toll on her while shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Heeramandi'.

Manisha Koirala, one of the most talented actresses in the Hindi film industry, left everyone mesmerised with her acting talents in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's series, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. The actress began her career in the acting world with the movie, Saudagar back in 1991, and since then, she hasn't looked back. However, Manisha's journey was not a bed full of roses. It was in 2012 when Manisha was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and in 2014, she got rid of the same after getting the required treatment. In a recent interview, Manisha shared whether being impacted by cancer took a toll on her while shooting for Heeramandi.

Manisha Koirala talks about dealing with depression while working on Heeramandi

In a recent interview with NDTV, Manisha Koirala shared that being impacted by cancer made her body and mind intertwined. The actress mentioned that she had worked in depression and revealed that it also consumed her when she was shooting for Heeramandi. Going further in the interview, Manisha stated that she used to tell herself to sail through this phase and to take care of herself when she was done shooting. Manisha can be quoted as saying:

"Impacted by cancer, I know how body and mind are intertwined. They are dependable. Even now sometimes I work in depression. Honestly speaking, when I was doing Heeramandi, it consumed me so much, my mood swings… And I was just like ‘Sail through this phase. Once this is out, focus on your health."

In an interview with Zoom, Manisha Koirala remarked that she was a bit sceptical about doing Heeramandi, as she was unsure about if her body would be able to take it. Manisha also added that the makers of Heeramandi were understanding, and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, too, understood her fears and anxiety and worked on them accordingly. In Manisha's words:

"I wasn’t sure if I would be able to do it or if my body would take it. The makers were understanding. After 12 hours of shooting, we would stop. Sanjay understood my fear and anxiety and worked on them."

In another interview with Zoom, Manisha Koirala stated that she already knew that her role in Heeramandi would be very demanding, but she was unsure about whether she would be able to do that much hard work. Talking about how her passion had compelled her to work hard, Manisha added that she had sat for seven long hours straight in a position to shoot a scene even while being uncomfortable.

Manisha Koirala talked about working with Heeramandi director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali

For those who don't know, Manisha Koirala and Sanjay Leela Bhansali worked on the former's debut film, 1942: A Love Story, wherein the latter was a co-writer. Later, Manisha was cast as a heroine in SLB's directorial debut, Khamoshi: The Musical. However, in an interview with Zoom, Manisha was asked if Sanjay Leela Bhansali has changed at all. The actress shared that SLB has not changed a bit, and he is the same simple person he was. Manisha mentioned that Sanjay lives in a 2-3 bedroom attached house and still wears khadi kurtas, and no matter how many larger-than-life movies he makes, he lives a simple life.

In the same interview, Manisha Koirala was asked if Sanjay Leela Bhansali is short-tempered and has any anger issues. The actress revealed that everyone is frustrated, and it would be very inappropriate for others to expect that celebrities do not have mood swings and do not get frustrated. Talking about SLB, Manisha added that the former lives and dreams in cinema, so when others do not match up to his expectations, it's very natural for him to be frustrated.
