On October 12, 2026, a South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said that the man was not accompanied by anyone in the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. A health and safety investigation has now been launched, with City of Doncaster Council leading the probe. Dan Swaine, the council’s executive director, said:
"We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred this weekend and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with everyone involved, including the family and loved ones of the person who tragically lost their life, those who witnessed the incident and the staff at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, as well as the emergency services who responded swiftly."
Zookeepers tried their best to save the man. They reportedly fired five loud blasts near Altai using acoustic devices to distract the mammal and encourage it to move away from the man. Two ambulances and a helicopter attended the park near Doncaster at around 1.35 p.m. Emergency workers put up a black screen around the tiger's enclosure to stop people from seeing what was happening while they tried to treat the injured man.
The tiger named Altai was moved to Yorkshire Wildlife Park from Dyreparken in Kristiansand, Norway, in February 2025 as part of the European Endangered Species Programme. Dyreparken biologist Helene Axelsen said Altai was born at the Norwegian zoo in 2021. Altai is a Siberian tiger.
