He was best known for his role as ‘Robin Tripp’ in the TV sitcoms Man About the House and Robin’s Nest, which were massive hits in the 1970s. According to reports, it was the Royal Variety Charity’s care home that announced the news of Richard’s death.
As per reports, Richard O'Sullivan was 82 years old when he took his last breath. The legendary comedy actor passed away while being surrounded by his close family at Brinsworth House. Richard had lived at the Royal Variety Charity's care home in West London for 23 years before his death.
In a newly released statement, Life-President of the Royal Variety, Giles Cooper, said that Richard was not only the master of perfect comic timing, but also someone who brought pure warmth to the lives of his fans through his roles on British television. Claiming how much they will miss Richard after his passing, Giles added:
"Richard O’Sullivan was a master of effortless charm and impeccable comic timing, bringing pure warmth, wit, and unforgettable joy to millions of living rooms as a true giant of British television. He will be sorely missed by us all at the Royal Variety Charity."
Later, the actor’s son, James O’Sullivan, also issued a statement via the charity. He gushed about how funny and charming his dad was in real life while he continued to appear on TV screens for so many years. He said that Richard was kind-spirited and good-humoured.
James also stated that Richard was a doting grandfather and a wonderful dad whom he will miss dearly. He said that even though the majority of Richard's career was planned out before he was born, he was pretty fortunate that he got to witness his dad’s talents thanks to the countless reruns of his shows. In his words:
"Although much of his career happened before I was born, I was fortunate enough to be able to enjoy and witness his incredible talents on the countless reruns of his shows that made him the respected and loved actor that he was. I would like to thank the incredible team at Brinsworth for their love, kindness, and care over the last 23 years. They have been truly amazing and will always hold a special place in my heart."
The news of Richard's passing has not only left his loved ones heartbroken but also his fans. Taking to social media, a user wrote, “I am absolutely gutted to hear the news of the passing of Richard O’Sullivan. Growing up, there was nobody on television I looked forward to watching more, and he was a constant source of joy.” Another friend, Jess Conrad, wrote, “Devastated to learn of the passing of Richard O’Sullivan (codename Ricardo), my longtime friend & golfing partner. He was a fine actor, looked after so well for many years at Brinsworth House, the home for retired stars.”
Richard O’Sullivan began his acting career as a child actor. In his first film appearance, he played the role of a young boy singing in the Sunday School sequence of The Yellow Balloon. Years later, he starred in the fan-favorite Man About the House opposite Paula Wilcox and Sally Thomsett. He also acted in the show’s spin-off Robin’s Nest, which aired for six years from 1977 onwards.
Richard’s final acting roles came in the 1990s when he starred in a satire show called Holed. In 2003, the actor moved into Brinsworth House after suffering a stroke.
