Luigi Mangione appeared in front of a judge on August 14, 2026, and pleaded guilty to the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. He told the judge, "After years of enduring pain from a broken back, I shot Mr. Thompson, and he died. I knew what I was doing was illegal." Meanwhile, his lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, shared the new details during a press conference and said:
"He endured years of severe, debilitating pain, following a broken back, while struggling to navigate our health care and health insurance systems. He believed that the system had failed him and destroyed his life."
While Karen Friedman Agnifilo is now previewing her arguments to the judge at sentencing, Lurigi Mangione has admitted that he tracked Brian Thompson to a UnitedHealthcare conference. He said he used a gun he printed on a 3-D printer and affixed a silencer to it. Meanwhile, Brian's family, including his widow, was present at the hearing. Following the guilty plea, the family said they are happy Mangione has been held accountable for "this heinous act," and said:
"Now we look to the court to ensure that sentencing reflects the severity of this crime."
While reports earlier went rife that Luigi Mangione's lawyers were in serious negotiations with federal prosecutors over a deal involving a possible guilty plea. TMZ has now reported that the judge clarified there was no plea agreement, meaning Luigi did not cut a deal with the government before the hearing. Instead, he pled to the 2 charges against him and is essentially throwing himself at the mercy of the judge, hoping for less than a life sentence.
While the guilty plea has given the entire case a new turn, it has also brought attention to Luigi Mangione's sisters. For the unversed, Luigi has two sisters: MariaSanta Mangione and Luciana Mangione. MariaSanta works as a physician at the University of Texas Southwestern, according to her profile on Vanderbilt University's website. As per her LinkedIn profile, she studied at Vanderbilt from 2012 to 2020 and earned a Ph.D. in cell and developmental biology.
According to Google Scholar, MariaSanta Mangione is cited as a co-author on several publications, including the 2019 paper Molecular Form and Function of the Cytokinetic Ring and the 2023 paper Efficacy of Bortezomib Desensitization Among Heart Transplant Candidates. However, that is not all; the papers she co-authored have been cited 147 times by other scholars.
On the other hand, Luciana Mangione is an artist who previously worked in the grocery retail industry. According to a September 2024 profile in the online media publication VoyageBaltimore, she said, "I attended the College of Charleston where I majored in International Business and minored in Studio Art and Italian Language." In 2023, she had a daughter and "decided to pursue a career in painting professionally." She further added:
"I also worked in art galleries in Charleston, SC, and in Florence, Italy during my time in college. [After graduating, I worked on] retail operations, merchandising, and supply chain."
