A while ago, the rapper took to his Instagram to announce the death of his mother, Tameka Hill. Despite not having the best relationship with her while she was alive, Lil Nas admitted that her death is “gonna hurt.” As of now, the cause of death has not been publicly disclosed, but Lil Nas had previously shared that his mom used to struggle with addiction.
A video taken in Atlanta, Georgia, by a man driving a vehicle had caused quite the stir when it was revealed that the person he caught on camera was allegedly none other than Lil Nas X's mother, Tameka Hill. The video shows the rapper's mom standing on the corner of a busy street, holding up a sign that read, “feed me.” After spotting her, the man rolls down his car’s window to ask her if she is “Lil Nas’ mama.”
The two exchange a few words, although it is not clearly audible what the woman is saying because she is pretty far away. Additionally, there was also music playing loudly in the man’s car. At the end of the clip, the man who is recording tells her that the situation is “fucked up” before driving off.
As the video began gaining traction and doing the rounds on the internet, fans immediately came after Lil Nas, claiming that it was his duty to make sure that she is taken care of. The day after the original video was posted, Lil Nas’ father, Robert Stafford, spoke out to address the incident and defend his son against the immense backlash. Sharing a photo of the rapper hugging both his parents, Robert wrote:
"Despite what people say, @lilnasx is the greatest kid a parent can be blessed with. Although his mom is in a struggle with an addiction, she's still a queen, and he goes through great lengths to make sure we're taking care of. Those who have family members and friends dealing with addiction understands that there ain't enough money you can throw at this situation to make it right."
Robert added that he usually isn't the type of person who addresses personal issues publicly, but this time, he just had to. He also asked everyone to keep Lil Nas' mom in their prayers, before adding, “And to those out there trying to create a false story, you won't prosper.”
Lil Nas also reportedly addressed the video in a since-deleted tweet. He claimed that nobody knows “how many nights I've cried myself to sleep feeling guilty because nothing I tried would help my mom.”
In a 2020 interview with Variety, Lil Nas admitted that he never really talks about his mom. He blamed her being an addict for them not having ‘the closest relationship.’ He went on to admit that he had tried to help her before by “secretly” paying for her rehab treatment. However, when things still did not work out, it left the rapper struggling with “powerlessness.” He confessed:
“Even trying to get her better - things didn’t quite work out. But there’s still love. The biggest surprise of becoming globally famous? On the outside, everybody loves you - but on the inside, everything [feels] the same.”
On August 29, 2026, Lil Nas X took to Instagram to share the news of his mother, Tameka Hill’s death. The Old Town Road hitmaker posted a carousel of photos of his mom, including a more recent picture of them together. In the caption, he wrote, “RIP to the baddest ever! Love u forever mommy. This one's gonna hurt.”
