His death has left everyone in shock and his fans, friends and colleagues are mourning his demise. The news of his death was shared by a close acqaintence who shared a picture of him with the details of the actor's funeral.
Lee Yong-joo died at the age of 44 on August 29, 2026. As per Sports Chosun, Lee Yong-joo suffered a heart attack, and his close acquaintance shared a glimpse of his funeral altar. His funeral services will be held at the Bundang Jesaeng Hospital Funeral Hall in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. The funeral procession is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. on August 31, 2026, following which he will be laid to rest. The person who announced Lee's passing shared that he still cannot believe that the actor is no more. He wrote:
"Even as I write this, I still cannot believe it. Actor Lee Yong-joo, who brought laughter to many as the clumsy yet lovable ‘new recruit Lee Yong-joo’ in ‘Blue Tower', passed away suddenly from cardiac arrest this morning."
Lee further shared in the statement that the news of his passing has not been shared beyong his family and close friends. His phone is password protected and since it was a weekend, his family is also struggling to manage the situation. The statement can be read as:
"The news of his passing has not been fully shared beyond his family and close acquaintances. His phone is password-protected, and since it is the weekend, even his family is struggling to manage the situation. We kindly ask those who worked with him or had connections to him to help spread this news by reposting widely."
It is worth mentioning that Lee has been going through his heart condition from a long time, as in a 2013 interview, he had hinted at the same. He shared that he had been exempted from compulsory military service as he was diagnosed with a heart problem. He revealed that he was suffering from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is a rare disease. Lee found out about his condition during a physical examination and was granted an exemption. He had said:
"I have something wrong with my heart. I was exempted because of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a rare disease. I underwent a physical examination and was granted an exemption."
It is worth mentioning that Lee's mother was also suffering from the same condition. He had talked about her hospitalization with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and that's when his doctors had given him a warning that this condition potentially be inherited. His sudden passing at the age of 44 has left his fans mourning his loss as he was one of the most-loved stars of K-Drama.
One user on X wrote, "Actor Lee Yong-joo, best known for Blue Tower and Rude Miss Young-ae, has suddenly passed away at just 44. His friend announced the news on his social media, saying they still couldn’t believe what had happened. 44 is WAY too young. What is going on this august? can you just be over already."
Another user penned, "PRINCESS HOUR ACTOR LEE YONG JOO PASSED AWAY AT 44 He died from cardiac arrest as announced by a close friend on social media on August 29 May his soul RIP."
For the unversed, Lee has been a famous name in K-Drama. He is known for his roles in projects such as Franceska, Princess Hours, Saint Valentine and Ugly Miss Young-ae. However, his role in The Blue Tower catapulted his fame.
