Kouri Richins has been found guilty on multiple charges arising from the death of her husband, Eric Richins. The real estate agent and author was arrested in 2023.
Kouri Richins has been trending in the headlines since 2022 after being accused of being involved in the death of her husband, Eric. Before Kouri’s name was associated with this legal problem, she was active as a real estate agent. She even wrote a book titled, Are You With Me?, which discussed helping children who lost their parents. The book was published in 2023. The trial of Kouri Richins that happened on March 16, 2026 (ET) featured the jury discussing the evidence related to the case for almost three hours. The trial originally started last month on February 23, 2026 (ET), and around 40 witnesses were called by the prosecution. However, the defense opted not to bring any witnesses from their side. For the unversed, Kouri Richins was accused of poisoning her husband, Eric, by reportedly adding fentanyl to his cocktail. The verdict of the court stated that Kouri’s actions were aimed at getting financial benefits. Richins was found guilty of multiple charges, including aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, and falsifying insurance claims and forgery. Kouri is now expected to be sentenced to almost 25 years.
Among the witnesses, Kouri’s friend, Becky Lloyd, said that Kouri once told her that she felt trapped and was unable to find a way out of her marriage with Eric. Furthermore, Kouri allegedly told Becky that Eric’s death would be better for her. Notably, Kouri was accused of misusing Eric’s money, and the allegation was made by Eric himself in 2020. Eric had even claimed that Kouri reportedly removed her name as the beneficiary of her husband’s life insurance policy.
Eric Richins died in 2022, and Kouri spoke to Becky about her marriage around three months before Eric’s death. Legal documents also alleged that Kouri made fake bank statements for a loan using the financial information from the company owned by her husband. Eric and Kouri shared three children, and they tied the knot in 2013. While Kouri was active in real estate, she met Robert Josh Grossman, who confirmed the same when he testified in the case. Robert revealed that he and Richins met in 2020, and they eventually developed feelings for each other at one point.
Robert Josh Grossman told the court that Kouri Richins used to take care of him by giving him money at the time of need. The text messages reportedly shared between Robert and Kouri were also seen by the jury. Robert said that Eric’s death left a different kind of impact on Kouri and that he started having disagreements with Kouri on certain occasions, eventually leading to their split. Robert said that he was feeling guilty over his “wrongdoings” when he found that Kouri was charged with killing Eric in 2023.
Eric Richins was found dead inside his house in Utah on March 4, 2022. While speaking to the investigators, Kouri initially claimed that she gave a cocktail to her husband before he went to sleep. Kouri said that she was sleeping with her son for some time, and when she later returned to Eric, he was not responding. A month after Eric’s death, the autopsy report in April 2022 claimed that Eric’s death was the result of a fentanyl overdose.
Kouri Richins was accused of her husband’s murder in May 2023 and arrested by the authorities. Several charges, including aggravated murder, were imposed on Kouri, who maintained the fact that she was not guilty. When the case was under investigation, Eric’s family allegedly told the authorities that they had doubts about Kouri’s involvement in her husband’s death. Eric’s sister, Amy, recalled that her brother believed that his wife had reportedly attempted to kill him when they went on a trip to Greece.
According to Associated Press, Kouri Richins was looking down while the court was declaring its verdict on the case. Notably, Eric Richins’ family members became emotional after Kouri was found guilty. Eric’s sister, Amy, reacted by saying that all of them feel like they are in shock and expressed satisfaction with the fact that her brother got justice. Amy mentioned that the family can now honor Eric while supporting his sons at the same time.
The trial was originally supposed to happen for five weeks. However, it was delayed after the defendant decided not to testify in court. The defendant’s legal team also rested the case, alleging that the prosecution did not have sufficient evidence to convict Kouri of murder. 26 more criminal charges related to money have been additionally imposed on Kouri, and they are yet to go for trial. Meanwhile, Kouri’s sentencing is scheduled on May 13, 2026.
