On Saturday, the former Real World star and author shared an emotional 11-part post on Instagram, reflecting on the mental health crisis that she says dramatically changed her life.
Kelley, 49, revealed that she experienced what she described as “breakthrough drug-induced mania with psychosis,” which left her struggling with delusions and behaving in ways she now deeply regrets.
The actress shared a raw account of her manic episodes and extreme delusions. Among those delusions, Kelley said she went as far as to believe she was running for president at one point. Opening up on her difficult ordeal, Kelley began by writing:
"Wow ... I have taken about 100 deep breaths to write this. How do I even start? It’s been a year since I recognized what everyone around me could see: I was not well, and I needed help."
Kelley said she felt as though her "brain had been hijacked", revealing that she has spent the past year working with doctors, therapists and psychologists to better understand what happened. In her candid post, Kelley said she later learned she had experienced what she called "breakthrough drug-induced mania with psychosis."
Kelly described her episode as the result of a "perfect storm" involving stress, past trauma, hormonal shifts, hallucinogens, and prescribed medications. The experience left her "completely delusional" and caused her to develop grand ideas disconnected from reality. She wrote, “I think one of mine was that I was in the CIA and that I was running for President!"
Kelly admitted that her behavior during that period caused pain to the people closest to her, including Scott and their children. Kelley said many of the things she did, said, wrote, and posted were not based in "truth or reality." Looking back, she says she has struggled to come to terms with the damage her actions caused.
The most emotional part of Kelley’s lengthy statement was directed toward her estranged husband, Scott Wolf, 58, and their three children, Jackson, Miller and Lucy Marie. Kelley and the Party of Five actor were married for more than two decades before their highly publicized separation in 2025.
Kelley acknowledged the pain she has caused her family, especially Scott, her "husband of twenty years," who was "taken through a nightmare that wouldn’t even fly in a movie script; it was so brutal." She expressed deep remorse for what her family endured. Kelly continued:
"Causing you pain and being the reason you suffered will haunt me for the rest of my life. It was my job to protect you, honor you, and keep you safe, and I became the cause of your heartbreak. I am sorry.”
Kelley also credited Scott and those close to her with helping her get through the crisis. She thanked the actor for never giving up on her. "You never gave up on me, and you fought like hell until you landed me in safe harbor. I owe you my life."
Kelley's statement comes after a difficult period that followed the end of the couple’s marriage in 2025. Scott filed for divorce shortly after Kelley publicly announced their separation. Days later, Kelley was placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold in Utah following concerns about her behavior.
The situation continued to play out publicly in the months that followed. Scott later sought a restraining order, though the petition was eventually withdrawn after the estranged couple reached a temporary agreement involving custody of their children. Kelley was even arrested in August 2025 and later received additional mental health treatment as she continued working toward recovery. Despite their painful and highly public split, Scott and Kelly have been working toward healing for the sake of their family.
In February 2026, the former couple reunited with their three children for a family outing at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. Scott said at the time, "We are healing. We are committed to being honest, authentic, and loving to ourselves, to each other, and for our children."
